SIG-Sauer P220R - .45 ACP. This updated P220 with accessory rails had been the standard production version of the P220 pistol until 2020, when it was discontinued in favor of newer models.

The SIG-Sauer P220 is a pistol platform developed by the Swiss company SIG-Sauer, to replace the SIG P210 in Swiss service. It is widely adopted by various US law enforcement agencies and police departments and used up to this day. Must also be noted that it competed against the Beretta 92FS in the XM9 trials to replace the Colt M1911A1 in US service, albeit lost mainly due the price of the magazines. An interesting fact is that was first sold in the US by Browning as the "Browning BDA .45 ACP", despite being unrelated to both the Browning BDA and Browning BDA 380.

The P225 is the slightly shrunk down version of the P220 made for law enforcement, using a standard 8 round magazine (as opposed to 9x19 P220s using a 9-rounder), though it is compatible with all magazines for 9x19 P220s. One could say that it is to the P220 what the Glock 19 is to the 17.

It should be noted that a variation of the SIG-Sauer P225 is the SIG-Sauer P6, a West German police handgun from the 70's and 80's. In some films, it may actually be the P6, rather than the P225, but for the sake of argument, the two are interchangeable.

Notable differences between the P225 and the P6 are that the P6 has a much heavier main-spring (giving it an intensely heavy DA pull) and a cruder feed ramp, thus lowering reliability with hollow point rounds. The P225, being a commercial weapon, was available with tritium night sights, while the P6 has standard iron sights.

The P225-A1 was launched in 2015. Compared to the original P225, there was a new contour to the frame, a short reset trigger, and a milled slide (the earlier one was stamped). The P225-A1 was discontinued in late 2019.

The P226 is basically the exact same weapon as the P220, but adapted to use double stack magazines, and NOT offered in 10mm Auto or .45 ACP, replacing them with .40 S&W and .357 SIG, respectively.

The P226 Navy (used by U.S. forces under the designation "Mk 25 Mod 0") is a P226 with a stainless steel slide (instead of the original's carbon steel), a MIL-STD 1913 rail instead of the proprietary SIG-Sauer one, and an engraved anchor.

China produces a series of P226 clones exported by Norinco (not to be confused with Norinco Group). The weapons' actual manufacturers are Zhejiang Xinhua Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Variants include the basic NP22 (clone of the 9mm P226), the NP34 (clone of the compact 9mm P228), NP56 (clone of the .45 ACP P220R), and the NP58 (variant in .40 S&W).

Other Chinese variants include the SDM XM9, a variant in 9x21mm IMI specifically aimed at the European market (and branded under Sino Defense Manufacturing, a trademark of Italian importer Prima Armi S.r.l.), the NP762, chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev, and the LP3 / LP4, which are variants of NP22 and NP34 with manual safeties.

The P227 is a P226 made for .45 ACP, as the P226 skipped the original P220's .45 option. Like the P226 to the P220 in the calibers it shares, is the exact same pistol as the .45 P220 save for minor dimensional changes to adapt it to a double stack magazine, and an added accessory rail, and thus except for a slightly wider muzzle diameter and slightly longer barrel, is near-indistinguishable from a newer model P226.

SIG has not revealed why the P227 was made as a separate pistol, rather than simply introducing a .45 ACP P226.

SIG-Sauer M11-A1 - 9x19mm. The M11-A1 is an upgraded version of the original P228/M11, based on the current generation P229 and includes upgrades from the P226 Navy (including the corrosion resistant internal coating).

The SIG-Sauer P228 was introduced in 1988 for commercial sale and was used by the US Secret Service until it was replaced by the newer P229 in .357 SIG. It is also used by the US military as the M11 for use by Pilots and Criminal Investigation forces due to need of a more compact weapon and can be authorized for shooters with smaller hands who have trouble gripping the Beretta M9 properly. Note that the newer P228R has a squared trigger guard. Production originally ceased when SIG-Sauer introduced the 9x19mm variant of the P229. However, in 2012, SIG-Sauer has introduced the M11-A1 for civilian sales, which is essentially the civilian version of the P228 used by the US military, equipped with a high capacity 15-round magazine.

SIG-Sauer P229 Legion (2022 version, optic ready) - 9x19mm

The SIG-Sauer P229 pistol was introduced to serve as a compact version of the P226 that could handle the higher velocity .357 SIG and .40 S&W rounds. The previous P228 had a lighter weight cast slide that could only take the higher pressure rounds if an overly heavy spring were installed. The newer P229 used a heavier CNC Machined steel slide that could take the high velocity return with a standard spring and not damage the pistol. The SIG P229 chambered in .40 S&W is the standard issue pistol of Department of Homeland Security and the Coast Guard, and P229s in .357 SIG are the standard side arm of the US Secret Service, and are commonly used by police departments around the country. When the P229 was expanded to offer the 9x19mm as a standard caliber, that marked the end of the production life of the older P228.

The original 9mm variant had a magazine capacity of 13+1 rounds. However all current versions of the P229 in 9mm now ship with 15-round magazines as standard.

The P229 also comes in a "DAK" (Double Action Kellerman) model, like the 226, once again identifiable by its lack of decocker and bobbed hammer.

The Geco P35 is a blank firing replica of the SIG-Sauer P225. It can be distinguished from the real pistol by the fact that the front half of the slide is noticeably taller than the rear, the barrel is set lower in the side creating a large solid area above it when viewed from the front, and there is a removeable side plate above the trigger on the right side of the frame with distinctive seams. It was chambered for the .35 Knall, a relatively short lived cartridge that could not compete with the far more popular 9mm P.A.K. blanks. Due to this unpopular calibre choice it was quickly replaced by the Geco mod. 225.
