SIG-Sauer MCX-SPEAR
The MCX-SPEAR is a variant unveiled in 2019 and designed for the United States Army's Next Generation Squad Weapon program. It is based on the MCX-MR, SIG-Sauer's previous unsuccessful submission for the Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System program. In April 2022, the MCX-SPEAR was announced as the winner of the NGSW program, and was designated originally as the XM5 but later changed to XM7.
The civilian version of the MCX-SPEAR became available in a limited run in January 2022, chambered in .277 FURY (the commercial variant of the 6.8x51mm hybrid cartridge). It went into full production in early 2023, initially available in 7.62x51mm NATO, followed by 6.8x51mm FURY military overrun ammunition in 2024.
A carbine version with a 9" barrel was developed before the NGSW entry and was unveiled in late 2018. Further info about it was disclosed in late 2021 when it was known as the MCX Raptor. As of 2024, however, it is internally referred to as the Spear Assaulter.

SIG-Sauer MCX-SPEAR LT
The MCX-SPEAR LT is the third generation of the MCX, introduced in 2022. With the release of the SPEAR-LT, SIG-Sauer also designed a new, padded, side-folding stock with an FDE finish option to match the rifles, which commercial versions of the rifle variant are sold with. While the commercial variant is referred to as the "SPEAR-LT", referencing the MCX-SPEAR from which it derives many of its improvements over the Virtus line, SIG-Sauer refers to the military versions as simply the "MCX LT" or "MCX Lightweight".
The defining features of the LT are its new, lightened, handguard and barrel design (borrowed from the SPEAR), ambidextrous bolt catch and release, proprietary SL muzzle device to allow for the use of SIG-Saurer's quick detaching SLX and SLH suppressors, and a new coyote brown coating (though black options are still available for purchase).
