Remington 1866 Derringer
The Remington derringer popularly known as the Remington 1866 Derringer was manufactured 1866-1935 and is based on a patent held by William H. Elliot. Other popular names for this pistol are the Remington Double Derringer, Elliot's Over/Under Derringer, and (for derringers manufactured 1921-1935) Remington 95 Double Derringer.
Three types are distinguished by the manufacturer's stamping. There are several variants of each type based on the positions and style of the stamping.
The Type I was manufactured 1866-1888 and is stamped E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y. and ELLIOT'S PATENT DEC. 12, 1865.
The Type II was manufactured 1888-1911 and is stamped REMINGTON ARMS CO., ILION, N.Y..
The Type III was manufactured 1911-1935 and is stamped REMINGTON ARMS - U.M.C. CO., ILION N.Y.
As no firing replicas are produced and originals were only made in a now unobtainable rimfire cartridge, visually similar modern firearms like the American Derringer Model 1 or Cobra Derringer are often used as a stand-ins. Curiously, this is sometimes the case even in video games, which don't require a physical prop.
