Yul Brynner
Yuliy Borisovich Briner, known better by his stage name Yul Brynner, was Russian-born American actor, model, and photographer. Born in 1920 in the short-lived Far Eastern Republic, Brynner was encouraged to pursue acting at a young age by his stepmother. In 1940, he arrived in the United States, where he made his professional stage debut in 1941 in a Broadway production of the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night. During the Second World War, he was employed by the Voice of America radio station, where he presented war propaganda in Russian and French. His first screen role was in the 1949 drama Port of New York. In 1951, he premiered as King Mongkut in the stage musical The King and I. This would become his best-known role, with Brynner playing King Mongkut a total of 4,625 times on stage, as well as in film and television adaptations. His signature shaved head appearance was a result of the success of this role. In addition to his prolific stage career, Brynner is also known for roles in Westerns such as the original The Magnificent Seven and Westworld. He died in 1985 of lung cancer, with some of his final work being anti-smoking commercials for the American Cancer Society.
