− | ''' | + | The '''Heckler & Koch UMP''' (German: ''Universale Maschinenpistole'', "Universal Machine Pistol") is a German submachine gun manufactured by [[Heckler & Koch]]. Designed in the 1990s and released in 2000, the UMP was conceived by Heckler & Koch as a lighter, cheaper alternative to their venerable [[MP5]] submachine gun. The UMP is designed to use .45 ACP and .40 S&W to target the American law enforcement and military market, as those cartridges are not commonly used in Europe compared to 9x19mm, with the MP5 not even available in .45 ACP. A 9x19mm UMP is also available. |
− | [[ | ||
− | + | Despite being intended to be the successor to the MP5 series of submachine guns, the UMP has not been able to overtake the MP5 in popularity and use. | |

The Heckler & Koch UMP (German: Universale Maschinenpistole, "Universal Machine Pistol") is a German submachine gun manufactured by Heckler & Koch. Designed in the 1990s and released in 2000, the UMP was conceived by Heckler & Koch as a lighter, cheaper alternative to their venerable MP5 submachine gun. The UMP is designed to use .45 ACP and .40 S&W to target the American law enforcement and military market, as those cartridges are not commonly used in Europe compared to 9x19mm, with the MP5 not even available in .45 ACP. A 9x19mm UMP is also available.
Despite being intended to be the successor to the MP5 series of submachine guns, the UMP has not been able to overtake the MP5 in popularity and use.
The Heckler & Koch UMP and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:
