City Shrouded in Shadow
|
City Shrouded in Shadow (巨影都市 Kyoei Toshi, lit. Shadow City) is a mystery, action-adventure survival "horror" game developed by Granzella, of Disaster Report (Zettai Zetsumei Toshi, 絶体絶命都市, The Desperate City) fame, and published by Bandai Namco. The player takes the role of either Ken Misaki or Miharu Matsubara in Ichi City as they are on their way to meet a young woman named Yuki Kouno. What started off as a normal night soon becomes a nightmare as the city is struck by a series of disasters taking the form several giant monsters, aliens, mecha and cyborgs dubbed "Shadows". On top of this the playable character accidentally witness a shady dealing going down with two high ranking Yakuza leaders and enforcers, Ryoji Shibata and Katsuhiro Muto. Now the player character must lead Yuki to safety and try to find a way to escape not only the giant monsters destroying the city but the Yakuza who are determined to tie up loose ends.
The game is unique in that the giant "Shadows" take the form of giant monsters and robots from several Japanese movies and shows such as Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Patlabor.
Surprisingly while the player character never obtains and uses a gun, guns are used prominently throughout the game by the Yakuza members and mecha, with many of the mecha guns being based off real firearms, just scaled up for their size and use.
The following weapons appear in the video game City Shrouded in Shadow:
Pistols
Springfield Armory Mil-Spec M1911A1
Throughout the game the high ranking Yakuza enforcer Katsuhiro Muto is armed with what appears to be a stainless steel Springfield Armory Mil-Spec M1911A1 with brown wood grips. Several other Yakuza members are also seen with similar variants as they chase the player. Interestingly Katsuhiro Muto is the only person in the game to use his gun against one of the shadows, a large Gyaos. The rounds prove ineffective. The mysterious Toru Fujiwara also seems to have the same variant M1911 as he holds both Katsuhiro and Toru at gun point during a stand off.
Astra Constable
High ranking Yakuza leader Ryoji Shibata is armed with what appears to be an Astra Constable throughout the game. The first chance he gets to use it is in the MGS-like sneaking segment in the warehouse while helping Katsuhiro and another Yakuza enforcer search for the player. Late in the game the journalist Risa Kashiwagi is also armed with an Astra Constable. The trigger guard is a bit more square than it's real life counterpart and the pistol grip is a bit longer than in real life.
Fictional Weapons
The following are fictional weapons based on real life weapons but scaled up for mecha.
Revolvers
37 Millimeter Vulcan Revolver Cannon
The very first weapon we see before we even start playing the game is an absurdly large "revolver" cannon the AV-98 Ingrams use as one pulls out the weapon during the games cinematic intro. The weapon is based off the Colt Python but scaled up and fires 37mm rounds. Due to the dark lighting both in the intro and the level where we see the weapon, it is hard to make out details but its brown handle can be seen in promotional art for the game and the emblem can be seen in both the intro and promotional art.
Shotguns
90mm Riot Cannon
An AV-98 Ingram Unit 2 can be seen armed with a pump-action 90mm Riot Cannon. The weapon resembles an oversized shotgun that fire 90mm rounds, having the appearance of a Remington 870 folding stock shotguns with a wooden pump grip and the folding butt-stock of a Franchi SPAS-12.
Rotary Cannons
EM-226 Evangelion Portable Revolving Multi-Barrel Machine Gun
Also known as the EM-226 440mm Gatling Gun for short, Evangelion Unit 01 uses an oversized rotary cannon from the "Rebuild" remake resembling an M61 Vulcan that fires, as the second name suggests, massive 440mm cannon shells. The ammunition is fed into the weapon by a massively upscaled drum magazine. When Unit 01 runs out of ammunition it will drop it and either use its fists or Progressive Knife to continue its attack on the Angel it is currently fighting.
Miscellaneous Weapons
The following is a weapon that is completely fictional and is far removed from reality. It is being included for the sake of completion.
Rifles
Micronizer Device
Midway through the game the player will wander around a science lab where they will have to avoid alien invaders called DADA who are armed with Micronizer Devices. These "rifles" shoot a beam of energy that shrink people down. These shrink rays deplete the players health, when their health reaches zero they will shrink down and it is game over. The player can interrupt the attack by shoving the DADA away, giving them time to run away as the invader recovers.
