+ | The Heckler & Koch HK416 assault rifle is an AR-15-pattern carbine based on the M4 carbine, with the principle feature being a gas piston system based on the Armalite AR-18 derived mechanism of the Heckler & Koch G36. Originally to be marketed as the "HKM4," the name was altered in an out-of-court settlement with Colt following a lawsuit over the latter's M4 trademark: Colt ultimately lost this trademark after Bushmaster Firearms refused to settle in the same way and the term "M4" was legally genericised as a name for carbine-length AR15 pattern rifles. HK has not yet altered the weapon's name in light of this, or indicated any plan to do so.

+ | The M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle is currently used by the United States Marine Corps as a light machine gun and an additional designated marksman role. In late December 2017, the USMC announced its intent to issue M27s to most (though not all) rifle-equipped infantry.
+ | |||
+ | The M27 fitted with the Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8×36 MR/T TS-30A2 riflescope is designated as the M38 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle. However, since the fielding of VCOG optics to standard M27 IARs, the status of the M38 as the standard DMR and the distinction, if any, between it and other M27 rifles is uncertain.

The Heckler & Koch HK416 assault rifle is an AR-15-pattern carbine based on the M4 carbine, with the principle feature being a gas piston system based on the Armalite AR-18 derived mechanism of the Heckler & Koch G36.

Heckler & Koch M27 IAR
The M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle is currently used by the United States Marine Corps as a light machine gun and an additional designated marksman role. In late December 2017, the USMC announced its intent to issue M27s to most (though not all) rifle-equipped infantry.
The M27 fitted with the Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8×36 MR/T TS-30A2 riflescope is designated as the M38 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle. However, since the fielding of VCOG optics to standard M27 IARs, the status of the M38 as the standard DMR and the distinction, if any, between it and other M27 rifles is uncertain.
