The third season is created by Robert Kirkman and Glen Mazzara. Rick's group finds a new safe place in the form of a prison and tries to make a new home out of it, while Andrea and her new companion Michonne find themselves in the surviving settlement called Woodbury, led by "The Governor". Soon the two communities are forced to face off in a battle. The season consists of sixteen episodes and was premiered on October 14, 2012 on AMC.

Philip Blake / "The Governor" (David Morrissey) uses a Steyr AUG A1 in "Home" (S3E10). He also uses the rifle during the second attack on the prison in "Welcome to the Tombs" (S3E16).
TRIVIA: The weapon is likely meant to be a full-auto conversion of an AUG SA, a semi-automatic variant of the A1 which was imported to the US for civilian use before being banned in 1989. Fully-automatic AUGs are extremely rare in the United States, as unlike the M4A1 they are not military issue and are not used by any law enforcement entities apart from US Customs and Immigration Enforcement. The civilian variant of the AUG is the STG-556 which has a different design than the A1.
Type 56
Shumpert (Travis Love) and at least two other Woodbury guards (including William Tokarsky) are armed with Type 56 rifles with slant compensators during a shootout in "Made to Suffer" (S3E08). Shumpert and another soldier (Brendon Cornwell) are armed with assault rifles during the attack on the prison in "Welcome to the Tombs" (S3E16).
Type 56-1
Due to a continuity error, Daryl (Norman Reedus) takes a Type 56-1 with a railed handguard out of the car trunk in "When the Dead Come Knocking" (S3E07), however, Oscar left the WASR-10 there before that. In a subsequent "Made to Suffer" (S3E08), Daryl uses the Type during a firefight with the Governor's men. Glenn (Steven Yeun) also briefly holds the rifle in the same episode. Allen (Daniel Thomas May) takes the Type 56-1 from the warehouse and gives it to another guard (Joseph Setticase) at the beginning of "Prey" (S3E14). Before the trip to Woodbury in "When the Dead Come Knocking" (S3E07), Oscar (Vincent Ward) puts the gun along with other weapons in the car trunk, but due to a continuity error it is later replaced by a Type 56-1 carried by Daryl later in the episode. Like the M4A1 above, this rifle was not among their weapons in the previous season, thus was most likely found in between Seasons 2 and 3, as the group was on the move for several months scavenging. One of the Woodbury soldiers (Luther Thompson Jr.) is armed with the same rifle during the attack on the prison in "Welcome to the Tombs" (S3E16).
Sniper Rifles
Accuracy International Arctic Warfare
An Accuracy International Arctic Warfare appears in the hands of one of Woodbury guards (Brad Balentine) on the wall in "Home" (S3E10). Another resident (Will Gara) holds the rifle while unloading a truck in "I Ain't a Judas" (S3E11). Noticing an approaching vehicle in "I Ain't a Judas" (S3E11) Carl (Chandler Riggs) aims the Remington 700 BDL rifle. In "Clear" (S3E12), Rick (Andrew Lincoln) finds another Remington in Morgan's hideout posing as the same rifle Rick gave Morgan during their first encounter, but actually it's a different rifle (or even a non-firing replica).
Remington 700 VLS
Rick (Andrew Lincoln) uses Dale's Remington 700 VLS rifle with a Simmons ProHunter® scope again clearing the prison from walkers in "Seed" (S3E01). Carol (Melissa McBride) carries the rifle behind her back guarding the gate in "The Suicide King" (S3E09). In "I Ain't a Judas" (S3E11) the rifle briefly appears in Glenn's (Steven Yeun) hands when an unknown car arrives at the prison. Rick holds the rifle at the end of "Arrow on the Doorpost" (S3E13). Steyr SSG 69
Maggie (Lauren Cohan) checks out a suppressed Steyr SSG 69 in "Arrow on the Doorpost" (S3E13). While guarding the Woodbury wall in "Prey" (S3E14) Tyreese Williams (Chad Coleman) fires a suppressed rifle with a camo wrap, but misses several times. Also being left-handed makes him awkwardly cycle the bolt. At the beginning of "Welcome to the Tombs" (S3E16), after Tyreese and Sasha refuse to participate in the attack on the prison The Governor (David Morrissey) takes the rifle from the soldier (Joseph Setticase) and gives it to Tyreese. He aims at Rick's group at the end of the episode during the skirmish at Woodbury gates.

However, for unknown reasons, the Mossberg 500 is used instead of the Mossberg 590, also fitted with a heatshield and a KNOXX SpecOps NRS stock with pistol grip, which can be told by the different endcap. Going to Woodbury in "When the Dead Come Knocking" (S3E07) both Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Oscar (Vincent Ward) carry the shotgun, but Oscar eventually takes it for himself during the fight in "Made to Suffer" (S3E08). Glenn (Steven Yeun) carries the Mossberg behind his back in "This Sorrowful Life" (S3E15). In the same episode, Rick sees a vision of Shane (Jon Bernthal) with the Remington. The two residents who survived the shooting also continue to use shotguns in "The Suicide King" (S3E09). During the attack on the prison at the end of "Home" (S3E10), Maggie (Lauren Cohan) takes out the shotgun and gives it to Beth (Emily Kinney). At least two residents (Will Gara and Brendon Cornwell) are briefly seen with shotguns in "I Ain't a Judas" (S3E11). Beth also holds the shotgun in the same episode. Morgan (Lennie James) carries the Remington behind his back at the end of "Clear" (S3E12). Shumpert brings the shotgun to the cart with other weapons while collecting weapons from all the Woodbury Residents in "Prey" (S3E14). Machine Guns
Browning M2HB
A Browning M2HB machine gun is mounted on a National Guard HMMWV that the Governor brings back to Woodbury in "Walk With Me" (S3E03). It appears to be a mockup identical to the one was fitted on the fake M1 Abrams tank in Season 1. Distrusting the Governor Michonne (Danai Gurira) checks the machine gun in "Killer Within" (S3E04). A car with the MG is briefly seen on the streets of Woodbury in "Arrow on the Doorpost" (S3E13). Allen (Daniel Thomas May) and Ben (Tyler Chase) take out the machine gun and mount it on the HMMWV in "Prey" (S3E14). Later, one of the Woodbury residents (Joseph Setticase) is seen behind the machine gun. Shumpert (Travis Love) fires the M2HB while clearing the prison yard during the attack in "Welcome to the Tombs" (S3E16). Allen is also about to use the machine gun, but it jams.
