Colt Double Eagle
The Colt Double Eagle is an American semi-automatic pistol designed and manufactured by Colt, manufactured from 1990 to 1997. The pistol was designed in the late 1980s, in response to the rise of "wonder nines" such as the Glock 17 that supplanted revolvers as the preferred sidearms of law enforcement and military forces. The venerable M1911 pistol series has also begun to be regarded as outdated by this time, so Colt decided to essentially "reboot" the basic M1911 design into a modern "combat handgun". As such, the Double Eagle shares many of the same parts and controls from an M1911 and uses the same magazines, but was updated with a double-action trigger. However, Colt chose to continue using single-stack magazines, despite the fact many of the handguns the Double Eagle was meant to compete against use double-stack magazines that offer around twice the capacity of the eight-round Double Eagle. The Double Eagle was primarily offered in .45 ACP or 10mm Auto, with a somewhat uncommon 9x19mm version later produced, along with considerably rarer .40 S&W and .38 Super versions.
The Double Eagle was an ultimately unsuccessful venture, as converting the single-action M1911 design to double-action required the addition of many small, complex parts that made maintenance difficult. It was also more expensive than most of its competition, almost all of which offered higher magazine capacities as mentioned earlier.
The standard version of the Colt Double Eagle has a 5" barrel with 8 round capacity. The Colt Double Eagle Commander has a 4.5" barrel, and the smallest version, the Colt Double Eagle Officer, has a 3.5" barrel.
The Colt Double Eagle and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:
