The X-Files - Season 1

The X-Files premiered on Friday, September 10, 1993 on FOX, amidst some doubt over the viability of the series' nature. The show was developed by Chris Carter, who, after becoming interested in stories of purported alien abductions and government coverup-type incidents (such as Watergate), formed the concept of a darker investigative-type show touching on such aspects and other, more supernatural facets, featuring elements from such titles as The Twilight Zone and Kolchak: The Night Stalker, as well as the recent hit film The Silence of the Lambs. After his first pitch to the network was rejected, he re-worked the pilot into network approval with help from Daniel Sackheim, then a producer for Law & Order.
The main stars ultimately chosen were an interesting pairing: David Duchovny - an LA actor more inclined towards feature film work, who, by that time, had appeared in smaller, generally lesser-known parts (his recurring role in Twin Peaks arguably being the sole notable instance), and Gillian Anderson - a then 24-year old actress with considerable theater experience but little familiarity with film or TV productions. Also interesting was their characterization, with Chris Carter opting to go against known typecasts and setting up the male character, Mulder, as the 'believer' and Scully, the female, as the 'skeptic' (Ironically, those qualities are reversed for Duchovny and Anderson in reality). Carter, despite being a California native, opted to have the series filmed on-location in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, primarily due to its' considerable amount of surrounding forestry (and the atmosphere it provided).
The first season ran for 24 episodes from September 1993 to May 1994. Though all done in-sequence, the episodes consisted entirely of 'one-and-done' stories, with no real over-arcing storyline(s) nor any long-term story planning. Subsequently, as the show formed what would be its' main background mythology (regarding a combined government and alien conspiracy) and developed actual 'arcs' pertaining thereto, the show would continue featuring unrelated single-episode stories, which would be known as 'Monster of the Week' episodes. In addition, many guest actors in the first season, intended only for minor characters with few or only even single appearances, would have their characters become major roles throughout the rest of the series. Among these would be Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), the administrative head of the X-Files unit (and as such, Mulder and Scully's direct superior), in a major recurring role and ultimately as a starring regular in the ninth season and tenth season revival; Mulder's consulting conspiracy-theorist group, 'The Lone Gunmen', who would later be featured in numerous episodes and would also have their own short-lived spin-off series; and most notably, the pilot's considerably minor 'Smoking Man' character (William B. Davis), who would greatly evolve and expand to become the series' principal antagonist. The setup of much of the show's background and secondary characters in these early years was due to the influence of writing duo Glen Morgan and James Wong, who would go on to develop their own series Space: Above and Beyond.

Note on episode numbers
The original pilot episode of the show featured its own unique production number (1x79), with the episode following the pilot listed with the production number '1x01' and all other subsequent episodes produced and numbered in sequence accordingly (1x01, 1x02, 1x03, etc). As such, on most 'official' sites (including IMDB), the pilot (which is the season's first episode) is listed simply as "Pilot" and/or as episode "0" (S1E00), while the following episode listed as episode "1" (S1E01) after its production number 1x01 despite technically being the second episode aired in the season, and so forth. This manner of numbering/listing the first season episodes is followed on this page, explaining why the pilot is listed as 'S1E00' as well as why subsequent episode numbers appear "off" by one. This situation is unique to the first season only, as episodes of subsequent seasons on other pages (as well as here on IMFDB) are numbered/listed sequentially by air-order as is typical with other shows.
Pistols
Taurus PT92
Early in the first season, FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) carries a Taurus PT92 as his sidearm. He carries the weapon beginning in "Pilot" (S1E00) until last carrying it in "The Jersey Devil" (S1E04). Mulder fired the Taurus only once during this time - in "Conduit" (S1E03) - to chase away a pack of wolves. A PT92 is also notably seen wielded by a member of the Arctic Ice Core expedition in "Ice" (S1E07), though later it becomes a replica of an actual Beretta 92FS. Taurus PT92s are also seen carried throughout the earlier seasons of the show by policemen and government agents as well as soldiers and military personnel as a Beretta M9 substitute.
Glock 19
After a few episodes in the first season, Mulder switches his sidearm to a Glock 19, which he carries for the remainder of the season - From "Shadows" (S1E05) to the season finale "The Erlenmeyer Flask" (S1E23), with the exception of a single scene in "Ghost in the Machine" (S1E06). A Glock 19 is carried by Claude Peterson (Blu Mankuma), an undercover government agent posing as a building engineer in that scene in "Ghost in the Machine" (Likely Duchovny's Glock, which would explain why he uses a different gun for only that particular sequence). Scully also briefly handles Mulder's Glock (unloading it) in "Ice" (S1E07). Mulder's pistol is a second generation Glock, identified by the checkering on the front and rear straps of the pistol grip. In "Tooms" (S1E20), Mulder loses his Glock in a narrow escalator maintenance tunnel, the first instance in which he loses his sidearm. Glock 19s are also seen throughout the season wielded by police and government officers and military personnel, notably several of the elite recovery soldiers in "Fallen Angel" (S1E09).
Bernardelli Model 60
Early in the first season, FBI Special Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) carries a Bernardelli Model 60 .32 ACP pocket pistol as her sidearm. She carries the weapon beginning in "Pilot" (S1E00) until "Ghost In The Machine" (S1E06). The pistol is a single-action straight-blowback weapon with a frame-mounted manual safety. The Model 60 was introduced in 1959, the magazine release is located at the butt of the pistol grip. It features a "VB" logo (Vincenzo Bernardelli) on the left grip. Scully's Model 60 has brown grips.
Manurhin PPK
After a few episodes in the season, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) switches to a Manurhin PPK .32 ACP as her sidearm. The Manurhin PPK is a French clone of the German Walther PPK made under the license of Walther. Scully carries the weapon starting in "Ice" (S1E07) and carries it for the remainder of the season. In "Fallen Angel" (S1E09) the Manurhin PPK had a misfeed, perhaps because Scully didn't rack the slide with enough fervor. Scully's PPK is also taken and briefly used by an FBI agent (possessed by the reincarnated spirit of a career criminal) in "Lazarus" (S1E14).
M1911A1
Standard M1911A1 pistols are seen occasionally throughout the series. One with parkerized finish is seen held on Tommy (Callum Keith Rennie) in "Lazarus" (S1E14) by Jack Willis (Christopher Allport). What appears to be a stainless (or possibly nickel) M1911A1 is seen in the hands of an Atlantic City Police SWAT officer in "The Jersey Devil" (S1E04).
Brixia Arms Model 92 Army
A Brixia Arms Model 92 Army replica of the Beretta 92FS is briefly seen in an evidence bag in "Ice" (S1E07), which is a continuity error, as the pistol was previously a Taurus PT92 (see above). The pistol is ripped out of its bag and fired once by Dr. Nancy Da Silva (Felicity Huffman) on a psychotic rampage, before she is tackled by Mulder.
Reck Miami 92F
In "Lazarus" (S1E14), FBI Special Agent Jack Willis (Christopher Allport) notably uses what appears to be a Beretta 92FS, but close inspection reveals that his pistol is actually the Reck Miami 92F, a blank-firing replica of the Beretta 92F manufactured by Umarex. It is recognizable by the filled-in hammer and the fact that when fired at the range, the shell casings it ejects are silver 9mm PAK blanks. This gun is also used by female career criminal Lula Phillips (Cec Verrell) in the same episode. Reck Miami replicas would appear several other times throughout the season, being used by FBI agents and police officers.
Smith & Wesson 3904
For a single scene in "Ghost in the Machine" (S1E06), instead of the Glock 19, Mulder carries what best appears to be a Smith & Wesson 3904, which he is seen unloading at gunpoint. The pistol features several characteristics of an early 3rd generation S&W semiauto, notably the slightly curved backstrap, wraparound grips and squared-off trigger guard. It is not a Smith & Wesson 5904 as was previously listed, due to what appears to be a lack of frame bulge and the smaller single-stack magazine.
Beretta 'Cheetah'
Beretta Cheetah pistols are seen several times in Season 1, some being wielded by FBI and government agents. A Beretta Cheetah is also seen used by Dr. Sally Kendrick / 'Eve 6' (Harriet Harris) in "Eve" (S1E10). Another Beretta Cheetah is used by Dr. Frank Nolette (James Sloyan), an aeronautical scientist, in "Roland" (S1E22).
Desert Eagle
A polished nickel Desert Eagle is seen as the sidearm of US Air Force Colonel Calvin Henderson (Marshall Bell), the elite recovery unit commander in "Fallen Angel" (S1E09). It is only seen in his holster, and never used.
SIG-Sauer P226
What appears to be a SIG-Sauer P226 is seen used by 'The Crew-Cut Man' AKA 'The Cleaner' (Lindsey Ginter) in the season finale "The Erlenmeyer Flask" (S1E23).
Stainless Semiauto Pistol
A stainless semiauto is seen carried by 'Deep Throat' (Jerry Hardin) at the conclusion of "E.B.E." (S1E16). The pistol appears to have a hooked trigger guard similar to an early-version Smith & Wesson 5906.
Revolvers
Taurus Model 66
Various Taurus Model 66 revolvers appear occasionally throughout the earlier seasons of the series. A 6" barreled stainless Taurus Model 66 is wielded by a genetically regenerated and altered convicted killer (previously taken down by Mulder) near the conclusion of "Young at Heart" (S1E15).
Ruger Speed Six Snub
What appears best to be a snub-nosed Ruger Speed Six is seen twice in the season - First in "Ice" (S1E07) wielded by one of the Arctic Ice Core expedition crew members in a standoff with another crew member armed with a Taurus PT92, and then near the conclusion of "Born Again" (S1E21), where it is brandished by a Buffalo police detective.
Colt Python
A police officer is seen wielding a Colt Python in "Eve" (S1E10).
Ruger Blackhawk
What appears to be a Ruger Blackhawk revolver is carried by Indian Reservation Sheriff Charles Tskany (Michael Horse) in "Shapes" (S1E18)
Unknown Revolver
An unknown revolver is seen wielded by a New Jersey state trooper near the beginning of "The Jersey Devil" (S1E04).
Submachine Guns
Heckler & Koch MP5A3
Numerous Heckler & Koch MP5A3s are seen throughout the series. Upon closer inspection, the weapons seen in Season 1 are actually Tokyo Marui spring-powered airsoft guns. These are wielded by police tactical officers and government agents, as well as military and black-ops personnel. They are notably seen carried by several of the elite recovery soldiers in "Fallen Angel" (S1E09).
Heckler & Koch MP5K (Mocked up Kimel AP-9)
What appear to be Heckler & Koch MP5Ks are seen used by government agents and military/black-ops personnel. In reality, these are not real MP5Ks; but rather mock-ups built on the bolt carrier and magazine well of a Kimel AP-9, because the armorers in British Columbia did not have genuine MP5Ks during the 1990s. The same guns have also appeared in the film Crying Freeman and the series M.A.N.T.I.S. and The Outer Limits. These weapons would continue to be seen throughout the Vancouver-produced seasons of the series (Seasons 1-5).
M91S
M91S machine pistols are seen used by the elite recovery soldiers in "Fallen Angel" (S1E09). These custom-built weapons have been featured in several films and TV shows produced in British Columbia; The X-Files is notable as one of the earliest on-screen appearances of the weapons.
Assault Rifles / Carbines
Colt Model 715 / Olympic Arms K4B
Due to the series' filming in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for the first five seasons, most of the M16-type rifles seen throughout this period were Colt Model 715s, or, more likely, the Olympic Arms K4B equivalent, which seems to be favored by the Canadian armorers. These weapons generally appeared in the hands of US military personnel as an M16A2 stand-in, particularly in the episodes "Deep Throat" (S1E01) and "Fallen Angel" (S1E09).
Colt Model 733 / Olympic Arms K3B 'Commando'
Several episodes in Season 1 feature appearances of Colt "Commando"-type carbines, usually in the hands of military personnel and SWAT officers. There's a great close-up of one of these weapons at the beginning of "Deep Throat" (S1E01). The weapons feature A1E1 receivers (noted by the A1-sights, forward assist, brass deflector and full magazine fence), however these are not Model 733s, as these weapons feature what seem to be very short (Roughly 10") barrels, shorter than the M733's 11.5" barrel. Most likely, these are Olympic Arms K3B carbines that had their barrels cut down, given that the A1E1 receiver style was common on Olympic Arms rifles and carbines made in the 1990s.
Colt AR-15 SP1 (Mocked Up as M16A2)
Throughout the show, especially in earlier seasons, US military personnel are armed with Colt AR-15 SP1 rifles fitted with M16A1-style flash hiders as well as M16A2-style hand guards, standing in for the M16A2 service rifles that the soldiers should be using in real life. You can tell because the receivers of the guns don't have the "fencing" around the magazine release, plus they lack the A2-style rear sights, shell deflectors, and forward assists. These are not seen fired, but they can be full auto conversions since armorers in both Canada and the US picked up many SP1 conversions during the 1970s and 1980s. These weapons are notably seen wielded by military recovery personnel in "Fallen Angel" (S1E09).
Muzzelite MZ14 Bullpup
A Muzzelite MZ14 Bullpup (The bullpup configuration for the Ruger Mini-14) is seen wielded by at least one of the elite recovery soldiers in "Fallen Angel" (S1E09). The rifle was probably chosen due to its 'futuristic' look as portrayed in such feature films such as 1990's Total Recall.
Rifles
M1 Garand
Standard M1 Garand rifles are seen in two instances in the show's first season. One is wielded by a deputized citizen as part of a search party near the beginning of "The Jersey Devil" (S1E04). Another is seen in the hands of an honor guard member at the conclusion of "Space" (S1E08).
Sporterized Mauser 98k
What appears to be a sporterized Karabiner 98k bolt-action rifle variant is seen wielded by a New Jersey state trooper in a flashback near the beginning of "The Jersey Devil" (S1E04). What appears to be another sporterized Mauser is used by a rancher at the beginning of "Shapes" (S1E18).
Winchester Model 1894
What appears to be a Winchester Model 1894 lever-action rifle (or clone/copy) is seen carried by Ish (Jimmy Herman), a Native American wise man, in "Shapes" (S1E18).
Remington 700PSS
An FBI tactical agent/sharpshooter is seen with a Remington 700PSS in "Lazarus" (S1E14).
Ruger Super Redhawk (Mocked up to resemble the KAC Revolver Rifle)
In "Lazarus" (S1E14), an FBI sniper is armed with what appears to be a Knight's Armament Revolver Rifle. This rifle is actually a mock-up built on a Ruger Super Redhawk revolver that was fitted with a carbine length bull barrel, scope, bipod, and a black synthetic buttstock. The weapon was originally built by Felcan Enterprises for the film Another Stakeout, but would subsequently be re-used on countless other productions filmed in Vancouver, including The Sentinel, Supernatural and Psych, in addition to The X-Files. Since the real Knight's Revolver Rifle also used a Ruger Super Redhawk as a base gun, this method for creating the mockup approximated the production method for the original weapon.
Heckler & Koch HK770
What appears to be a Heckler & Koch HK770 is seen wielded by a trucker in "Eve" (S1E10).
Shotguns
Mossberg 500 (Numerous Variants)
Several types of Mossberg 500 shotguns are seen throughout the season - Due to the number of different variants, they will be sub-divided within this section. Note that it is possible some of these might actually be the lower-priced Maverick 88 models, as the show rarely gives good showings of the weapons' receivers (the safety placement being the only readily distinguishable difference between the two) and actual Maverick 88s are seen used in the show as well.
Mossberg 500 'Persuader'
Several standard riot-model Mossberg 500s, known as 'Persuader' models, are seen throughout the season, and indeed are the most common variant seen. The shotguns are used by numerous police and government agents, as well as seen in the hands of some military personnel.
Mossberg 500AT
Some of the Mossberg shotguns appear to be Mossberg 500AT variants, noted by the wooden foregrip.
Mossberg 500 Bullpup
Mossberg 500 Bullpups are seen used by some of of the elite recovery soldiers in "Fallen Angel" (S1E09). Black-ops units and other government agents would be seen with Mossberg 500 Bullpup shotguns throughout the series.
Mossberg 500 Field
A 'field' variant of the Mossberg 500, with long, ribbed barrel and wooden furniture is seen carried as a main weapon by Steve Humphreys (Tom O'Rourke), a lumber company security chief, in "Darkness Falls" (S1E19).
Maverick Model 88 'Cruiser'
Several Mossberg-manufactured Maverick Model 88 shotguns (the economy variant of the Mossberg 500) are also seen throughout the show. An FBI agent appears to wield a pistol-gripped 'Cruiser'-style Maverick 88 in "Lazarus" (S1E14). During the opening sequence in "E.B.E." (S1E16), a truck driver is also seen brandishing a Maverick Model 88 shotgun. The gun also appears to be set-up in a 'Cruiser' configuration - Meaning it is fitted a pistol grip and riot-length barrel - However the barrel is ribbed, and the weapon features what appears to be a Choate top-folding stock. It is noted as a Maverick and not a Mossberg 500 due to clear showing of the button-safety located on the front tang of the trigger guard (Actual Mossbergs feature a switch safety at the top-rear of the receiver). The same gun appears to be re-used later in the episode, wielded by a Military Police guard.
Remington 870
Standard Remington 870s are seen carried by several New Jersey state troopers at the beginning of "The Jersey Devil" (S1E04). Remington 870s would subsequently be seen wielded by other police officers and and government agents throughout the series.
Remington 870 Shorty Custom
A customized Remington 870 is seen wielded by career criminal Warren James Dupre (Jason Schombing) to commit a robbery and attempt to kill an FBI agent at the beginning of "Lazarus" (S1E14). The shotgun features a short barrel and forend featuring a Butler Creek tactical synthetic loop pump-grip, along with a pistol grip and heatshield over the barrel as well as a door-breaching muzzle brake. This is the exact same custom Remington 870 that appeared in the films Timecop, Crying Freeman, and several other movies and TV shows filmed in British Columbia - In this instance, the weapon has been fitted with a pistol grip rather than the combination pistol grip/stock seen in subsequent appearances (undoubtedly, the latter feature was added by the armorers later on).
Side-by-Side Double Barreled Shotgun
Several Side-By-Side Double Barrel Shotguns are seen used by police officers and deputized citizens conducting a search party at the beginning of "The Jersey Devil" (S1E04).
Over/Under Double Barreled Shotgun
An Over & Under Double Barrel Shotgun is used by a ranch owner to kill a supposed 'wolf monster' (that turns into a regular man) at the beginning at "Shapes" (S1E18).
Machine Guns
M60
Standard M60 machine guns are seen used by military personnel, primarily mounted on military Jeeps and HMMWVs, one is notably seen mounted on a M151 MUTT in "Fallen Angel" (S1E09).
Other
Palmer Cap Chur Long Range Projector
New Jersey Forest Service Ranger Peter Brullet (Michael MacRae) is seen using a Palmer Cap-Chur Long Range Projector to fire tranquilizer darts in "The Jersey Devil" (S1E04).
Taser
A Taser is seen fired at the beginning of "The Erlenmeyer Flask" (S1E23).
Police Photograph Weapons
In "Born Again" (S1E21), a police photograph is viewed, showing what is apparently the confiscated proceeds of a major bust, including a large number of mixed firearms.
