Robert Selden Duvall is an American actor, the recipient of multiple acting awards throughout his over 70 year long career. Born in 1934, Duvall was expected to serve in the United States Navy like his father before him, but defied his father by enlisting in the US Army, serving from 1953 to 1954 (where, by own admission, "I barely qualified with the M1 rifle in basic training"). Beginning his acting career in stage productions, he began to regularly appear in guest roles in various television series throughout the 1960s, with his film debut being the 1962 film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird. His breakout role was as "Lucky" Ned Pepper, opposing John Wayne in the original adaptation of True Grit.

He is best known for his roles as the title character in THX 1138, Tom Hagen in The Godfather, Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now, Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies (a role for which he received the Academy Award for Best Actor), Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove, and Martin Cash in Jack Reacher.
