Commandos 2: Men of Courage (2001, 2002, 2010)

Commandos 2: Men of Courage is a critically acclaimed World War II real-time tactics video game. It was released in 2001 for the PC, and ported a year later to the Xbox and PlayStation 2. In 2010, it was also released for the Mac OS X along with its sequel, Destination Berlin as part of the Commandos Battle Pack. In 2020, a remaster was released, titled Commandos 2 - HD Remaster.

The missions in the game were inspired by famous World War II movies. The mission "Saving Private Smith" was clearly based on Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. In the mission "The Bridge on the River Kwai", the Commandos must destroy the bridge, as in the film of the same name. Other references include the movies such as The Great Escape, Is Paris Burning?, and The Colditz Story.

The following weapons appear in the video game Commandos 2: Men of Courage:

Allied Weapons

Colt M1911A1

The M1911A1 is the standard sidearm of every member of the team in the game. Has unlimited ammunition and isn't reloaded. Appears as "M1911A".

The 3D pistol in the remaster, the exact texture/model size depends on the character model but it seems to generally be a 1911-ish pistol.

M1903A4 Springfield

The M1903A4 Springfield is used by Duke and Lips. This weapon has the best range and one hit will always kill targeted enemies. It erroneously shares ammunition with the G43 and Type 97.

M2-2 Flamethrower

The M2-2 Flamethrower is a devastating weapon, but finding "ammo" for it can be a big problem. Only Inferno is capable of handling this weapon.

German Weapons

Luger P08

MP 40

Gewehr 43

Wehrmacht snipers use the Gewehr 43. It is one of the poorly-modeled weapons in the game, because the in-game inventory image doesn't really look like the rifle at all, despite this it is still called "G43".

Gewehr 43 with ZF 4 scope - 7.92x57mm Mauser
The inventory icon of the Gewehr 43 appears to be a hastily modified version of the one used for the "Karabiner98k", evidenced by the presence of a bolt-action the Gewehr 43 most certainly does not have.

Mauser Gewehr 1898/Kar98k hybrid

The "Karabiner98k" is actually a Mauser Gewehr 1898/Kar98k hybrid. It is incorrectly portrayed with a box magazine instead of a five-round fixed magazine. It is used by German patrols and all of the Commandos can use it too. It has long effective range, but the ammunition is limited to 15 rounds per soldier.

In a glaring error in the remaster, the German and Japanese rifles are reversed and as a result, the German rifle is used by the Japanese.

Type 93 heavy machine gun

The Type 93 heavy machine gun appears as a mounted machine gun and is oddly used by German forces. Like other mounted weapons in Commandos 2, only the Sapper can use them and they have absurdly short range presumably in an attempt to balance them for a stealth game.

Type 96 AT / AA Gun

Other/Unusable Weapons

Several PPSh-41 submachine guns can be seen in the intro of the game.

Arisaka Type 2

The Arisaka Type 2 Paratrooper rifle was added in the remastered version. The rifle was likely intended to replace the basic Arisaka, however, in a glaring error the German and Japanese rifles were reversed resulting in the Type 2 being erroneously used by the Germans.

Mosin Nagant M91/30

In a frankly bizarre error, the Mosin Nagant M91/30 appears as the Japanese(!) sniper rifle in the HD Remaster. Seemingly whoever was in charge of the weapon icons saw the ushanka-like cap on the Japanese sniper uniform and assumed they were Russian instead of making a Type 97 icon for the inventory.

Smoke Grenade

A smoke grenade appears and can be used by the Driver.
