Iron Man is the 2008 feature film adaptation of the Marvel comic book series. Robert Downey, Jr. stars as Tony Stark, the CEO of a major weapons manufacturer who is seriously wounded in an ambush in Afghanistan and is captured by enemy fighters. While being held hostage and being kept alive by an improvised reactor placed near his heart, Stark uses his expertise to assemble a massive armored suit that he uses against his captors. Upon his rescue, he refines his armored suit design for use against those opposing forces intent on doing evil in the world. The film, which was directed by Jon Favreau (Cowboys & Aliens) is part of "Phase One" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that includes The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger and culminated in 2012's The Avengers. The film would spawn two sequels: 2010's Iron Man 2 and 2013's Iron Man 3. In 2022 it was entered into the National Film Registry.

The following weapons were used in the film Iron Man:

Handguns

Glock 17

The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents including Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) accompanying Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) to arrest Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) are armed with Glock 17s.

Heckler & Koch USP45

Members of the Ten Rings including Abu Bakaar (Sayed Badreya) carry the Heckler & Koch USP pistols in the .45 ACP variant as their main sidearms, which these pistols are made by Stark Industries. When Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) escapes from their camp using the Mark I suit, one insurgent tires to kill him by shooting him in the head with his USP, only to have the bullet ricochet off the armor and kill him instead.

A Ten Rings insurgent about to shoot at Stark's armor-protected head. At this angle, however, the .45 ACP ricochet would be deflected upward into the cave ceiling rather than going directly backwards into his head like it does.

Submachine Guns

Heckler & Koch UMP45

Several Teng Rings insurgents are armed with Stark Industries-made Heckler & Koch UMP45s, fitted with C-More red dot sights and Surefire Tactical vertical grips.

All of the weapons purportedly to be from Stark Industries were indeed set up with "Stark Industries" Markings. What is interesting here is that the Stark Industries plate says that it is a 5.56mm weapon, when the plate is affixed to a UMP45 (.45 ACP) submachine gun. The plates are probably generic props that were affixed to all "Stark" weapons since most of the customized weapons were M4s and G36s.

Rifles

Colt M4A1

In the beginning of the film, United States Air Force Airmen in Afghanistan accompanying Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) are seen armed with M4A1 carbines fitted with Insight Technologies ISM-V scopes (optics designed originally for the Heckler & Koch XM8 rifles) and KAC foregrips. Some of Raza's Ten Rings fighters carry M4A1s fitted with C-More and/or Trijicon ACOG scopes, foregrips and AN/PEQ-2 designators and fire at the Mark I Iron Man suit. USAF Pararescue Jumpers accompanying Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes (Terrence Howard) carry M4A1 carbines when picking up Tony after his escape. Upon Tony Stark return to the United States, airport security also carry M4s. In a deleted scene, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) attempts to use an USAF Airman's M4A1 Carbine, but finds out that it's jammed. The M4A1 used by Robert Downey Jr. in the deleted scene was actually an airsoft weapon due to his ineligibility to wield real firearms on movie sets. One of Raza's men wields a M4A1 with a M26 Modular Accessory Shotgun System (MASS) underbarrel bolt action shotgun and a Magpul M93 Modular buttstock as they hold Tony captive. The image seen here is a heavily edited clip that is included on the U.S. version of the trailer. The M4A1 with M26 MASS is put in to replace another shot of the weapon that is pointed at Tony Starks' head. This is because the MPAA won't allow trailers to show any weapons to pointed at a person, even if that's how the final cut shows it. This seems to be a fairly common practice as evidenced in the trailers for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Cop Out. Some of Obadiah Stane's (Jeff Bridges) men are seen armed with M4A1 carbines fitted with M203 grenade launchers.

As Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) slumps in a chair as he is held hostage by Raza's Ten Rings guerrillas, one of his captors holds an M4A1 fitted with an M26 MASS. The image seen here is a heavily edited clip that was included on the U.S. version of the trailer. The M4A1 with M26 MASS is put in to replace another shot of the Heckler & Koch G36C that is pointed at Tony's head. This is because the MPAA won't allow trailers to show any weapons to pointed at a person, even if that's how the final cut shows it. The stock of the G36C the terrorist is actually holding is still visible above the M4's C-More red dot sight and the M4 notably lacks the pistol grip which explains the obvious Photoshop of the M4 into the shot.

Heckler & Koch G36KV

Most of the Ten Rings insurgents carry Heckler & Koch G36KV carbines with various attachments, sold to them by Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) on behalf of Stark Industries.

Ten Rings insurgent (stuntman Michael Hillow) fires his G36KV at Stark's Mark I armor. This weapon is outfitted with an AN/PVS-14 NVS mounted behind an ACOG scope. This tandem double scope system would not allow the user to utilize the ACOG (a fixed-power magnified sight) during the day as it is positioned too far forward to allow proper eye relief, even when the NVS was removed. It is likely that the intention was to have a red-dot sight (no magnification) mounted foreword of the NVS.

Heckler & Koch G36C

Several insurgents of the Ten Rings use the Heckler & Koch G36C. During the escape from the Ten Rings' camp, Yinsen (Shaun Toub) grabs a G36C dropped by one of the insurgents and runs towards after them while firing wildly, trying to divert attention from Stark until the Mark I suit is powered up and he can use it to fight his way out.

Heckler & Koch G36K with AG36

Raza (Faran Tahir) is seen with a H&K G36K fitted with a Heckler & Koch AG36 grenade launcher, which he fires at Stark in the prototype Iron Man armor, but misses and is knocked out by Stark's missile instead. Erroneously the grenade fired is shown traveling like a rocket, with a flame trail and a perfectly horizontal trajectory. Grenades are not rocket propelled and travel in an arc.

Both Ten Rings fighters and USAF Airmen in Afghanistan can be seen using the Browning M2HB 50-caliber machine gun. The Ten Rings fighters place the machine guns in their camp, with the USAF Airmen have them mounted on top of their Humvees. Col. A FGM-148 Javelin missile launcher can be seen in the foreground in the Ten Rings' camp. The CLU on this prop launcher is fairly convincing, but the LTA is rather featureless and lacks bands and a carry handle. Note the white instruction labels, which are not present on Javelin and seem to have been based on those on an AT4.

BGM-71 TOW

BGM-71 TOW missile launchers can be seen in the Ten Rings' camp.

This launcher incorrectly has a yellow band at the rear end of the launch tube, and also has a strange, featureless extra section between the base of the traversing unit and the top of the tripod. This same launcher also appears in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Armored Suit Weapons

Mark I

The Iron Man Mark I suit, which Stark assembles while in captivity, is armed with two primary weapons:

Flamethrower

Two flamethrowers are mounted in each arm of the Mark I suit.
