Borchardt C-93
The Borchardt C-93 was the first mass-produced semiautomatic pistol. It was designed in 1893 by Hugo Borchardt of the German arms manufacturer Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken. Its action was based on the toggle lock mechanism used in the successful Maxim machine gun, which is housed in the distinctive bulbous protrusion at the gun's rear. Around 3,000 were produced and while tested by several militaries, it was never formally adopted by any armed forces, with many shooters stating that the gun's ergonomics made it awkward to shoot. Requests for an improved design led to Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken employee Georg Luger designing the iconic Luger pistol.
