State of Siege (original title État de Siège) is a 1972 French-Italian-West German political thriller directed by Costa-Gavras. The film follows the story of Philip Michael Santore (Yves Montand), a US advisor in Uruguay, who is kidnapped by the Tupamaros, a local leftist urban guerrilla group. The film is an exploration of the real-life kidnapping and execution of Dan Mitrione, a US advisor in Latin America who taught and perfected advanced interrogation torture techniques during the US-backed wave of right-wing military dictatorships in Latin America during the Cold War, known as "Operation Condor."
