About

The China South Industries Group Corporation Limited (CSGC), known within China as China Ordnance Equipment Group Corporation (Chinese: 中国兵器装备集团公司), is a Chinese state-owned industrial conglomerate involved in the production of military armaments. CSGC is China's most notable small arms manufacturer, with its subsidiaries designing and manufacturing most of the small arms in service in the People's Liberation Army.

Modern Chinese small arms branded under CSGC typically feature names beginning with "CS/", apparently standing for "China South".

Jianshe

Jianshe

Chongqing Jianshe Industry (Group) Co., Ltd. (Chinese: 重庆建设工业(集团)有限责任公司) is a subsidiary of CSGC, headquartered in Chongqing. Formerly known as Factory 296 (sometimes called "Factory 26", as the factory used "26" and "triangle 26" roll marks on its guns since 1955 for unclear reasons), Factory 296 was the People's Republic of China's successor to the Republic of China's 21th Arsenal, whose history could be further traced back to the Jinling Arsenal and the Hanyang Arsenal.

Factory 296 initially manufactured Chinese clones of Soviet weapons, most notably the Type 56 carbine, a clone of the Soviet SKS. After the Sino-Soviet split in the late 1950s, Factory 296 became one of the first Chinese factories responsible for the development of original Chinese weapon designs. They would go on to develop and manufacture the Type 63 rifle, the Type 81 family, and had major contributions to the design and manufacture of the Type 95 family, the QBZ-03, QCW-05, and QBZ-191.

Jianshe is also known for owning the "Emei" brand name in the west (historically the name of a line of precision sporting rifles and air rifles manufactured by Jianshe), which it (or Norinco and CSGC) uses to brand some of its exported small arms in western countries.

Additional information on Jianshe can be found here (Chinese language).

No. 208 Research Institute
