Model 17 Stielhandgranate
The Model 17 Stielhandgrante was the last stick grenade developed and used by German forces and the armies of Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire during World War One. The difference from the Model 16 is that the M17 has a slender warhead without a top-mounted lid.
It served as an attack and defense grenade and was characterized by a strong pressure effect when detonating, while the effect and range of the splinters of the warhead were smaller. The 1000g ammunition body could be hurled up to 25m. To defend against armored vehicles, several stick grenades were thrown as a "geballte Ladung" onto the roof or under the tracks of the vehicles. A variant of the M17 was characterized by a much larger warhead (diameter 140mm) and a stronger explosive charge. It was one of the first special anti-tank hand grenades
After the war, this grenade was used by the Reichswehr until it was gradually replaced in the late 1920s by the Model 24, which removed the star-shaped grip added to the base of the end cap and the belt clip on the head. Several countries copied this grenade, like Bulgaria and Finland (as the Varsikranaatti M32).
