To Hell and Back is the 1955 biopic focusing on the early life and wartime exploits of Audie Murphy, the most decorated US soldier of World War II. The film begins with his childhood in Texas, where he became the head of his family at a young age, then follows his enrollment in the Army where he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division. He fought in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy before landing in southern France and eventually fighting in Germany. In addition to being a Medal of Honor recipient, he also received battle honors from the French and Belgian governments. For the scenes set in World War II, Audie Murphy portrays himself.
The battle scenes were reused in Universal's 1967 film The Young Warriors based on a novel by Richard Matheson, who served as an infantryman in World War II.
The following weapons were used in the film To Hell and Back:
Rifles & Carbines
Stevens Crackshot 22 Rifle
A young Audie Murphy (Gordon Gebert) uses a Stevens Crackshot .22 rifle while hunting in Texas.
M1 Garand
The M1 Garand is seen used by most of the US Soldiers in the film, including Audie Murphy.
M1 Carbine
The M1 Carbine is seen in the hands of officers, and later Audie Murphy. Note how Murphy has two magazines taped together for a faster reload.
Mauser Gewehr 1898
German soldiers can be seen using the Gewehr 98 in the film.
Submachine Guns
M1928A1 Thompson
Audie Murphy can be seen using the M1928A1 Thompson. Note how, like with his M1 Carbine, he has two magazines taped together.
MP 40
The MP 40 is seen in the hands of German soldiers.
Machine Guns and Automatic Rifles
M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle
One of the US soldiers uses a M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle.
Browning M1919A4
US soldiers can be seen using the Browning M1919A4
Browning M2HB
The Browning M2HB is seen mounted on Sherman tanks. Audie Murphy uses one to defeat an enemy infantry attack, earning him the Medal of Honor. In the actual battle, Audie Murphy fired the Browning M2 from an M10 Tank Destroyer. Also, while the film depicts this action as having taken place in balmy weather and good visibility in rolling terrain, it actually took place in the bitter winter of 1945, at the edge of a forest and in conditions of poor visibility.
MG 42
The MG42 is used heavily by the German soldiers in the film. Audie Murphy also uses one in a scene.
Anti-Tank Weapons
M20B1 "Super Bazooka"
An anachronistically deployed M20B1 "Super Bazooka" is used by US soldiers to take out a German tank (actually a dressed-up US M41 Walker Bulldog) in Italy, presumably standing in for its temporally accurate predecessor.
