To Have and Have Not is a 1944 drama film starring Humphrey Bogart as world-weary American boat owner, Captain Harry Morgan, who along with his alcoholic sidekick, Eddie (Walter Brennan) make a living on the island of Martinique operating a charter sports fishing boat for hire. It is 1940, and America is still a neutral country as World War II rages around them. The pair are approached by "Frenchy" Gerard, the owner of the hotel where Harry rents a room. "Frenchy" is a member of the French Resistance. "Frenchy" and his compatriots want to hire Harry and his boat for a smuggling job. When the Vichy Sûreté Nationale (Vichy Gestapo) shows up with armed French Navy sailors and confiscates his money, Harry decides to help a resistance leader escape with the assistance of American traveler Marie "Slim" Browning (Lauren Bacall).
