The Brothers Grimm
|
The Brothers Grimm is a 2005 fantasy film directed by Terry Gilliam that is hardly based on the historical Brothers Grimm but reinvents them as fictional characters. It alludes to numerous motifs from the world of Grimm's fairy tales and fables about how the Brothers Grimm could have come up with their stories. French-occupied Germany in 1811: The brothers Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm travel through villages and towns. They pretend to collect fairy tales and stories. From the stories, they quickly discover that the naive rural population is afraid of witches and ghosts. And the brothers immediately offer to protect the people from ghosts and perform witchcraft and exorcisms. When the French occupying forces, led by General Delatombe and his henchman Cavaldi, get wind of the scam, they quickly capture the brothers and give them a choice: either a slow, painful death in Cavaldi's torture cellar or a trip to the small village of Marbaden to solve the mystery of a supposedly enchanted forest and the disappearance of young girls there.
