The Goryunov SG-43 was introduced during WWII, intended to replace the M1910 Russian Maxim as the standard medium machine gun. Like the 1910 Maxim, the Goryunov is usually seen on the 'Sokolov' wheeled-turntable mount. It was replaced by the PK machine gun in the 1960s.
Semi-automatic SG-43 machine guns exist in the United States, usually original receivers built up using imported parts kits from places like China or Poland.
- Goryunov SG-43 - First production version. Smooth barrel. Cocking handle on the left side. Produced between 1943 and 1945.
- Goryunov SGM - ("M" - Modernizirovannyy - Modernized). Second production version. Ribbed barrel. Cocking handle on the right side. Produced between 1945 and 1968.
- Goryunov SGMB - ("B" - Bronetransportery - Armored vehicle): Mounted on the front, side or rear support of the armored personnel carrier.
- Goryunov SGMT - ("T" - Tankovy - Tank): Mounted inside the tank turret on the gun bed support and equipped with an electric trigger.
