Richard III
|
Richard III is the 1995 film adaptation of the Shakespeare play starring Ian McKellen as the title character. Directed by Richard Loncraine, the film co-stars Annette Bening, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jim Broadbent, Robert Downey, Jr., and Nigel Hawthorne. Though the story remains faithful to Shakespeare's play about the ambitious and twisted Richard of Gloucester, the film's setting is an alternate 1930's Britain as Richard's evil plans to gain control of the English throne parallel the rise of fascism in Germany and Italy under the rule of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, respectively. In keeping with the period of the film, the majority of the weapons and vehicles seen are somewhat consistent with the actual time period in history. The film was based on a successful stage version which also starred McKellen.
The following weapons were used in the film Richard III:
Pistols
Mauser M712 Schnellfeuer
In both the opening and closing scenes, Richard of Gloucester's (Ian McKellen) weapon of choice is a Mauser M712 Schnellfeuer.
Colt M1911A1
Prince Edward (Christopher Bowen) grabs a Colt M1911A1 when the headquarters comes under attack, and is still trying to chamber it when Richard shoots him down. Likewise, the Earl of Richmond (Dominic West) holds one on Richard in the final confrontation.
Submachine Guns
Bergmann MP 18
In the film's opening, several of Richard's soldiers wield Bergmann MP 18s while storming King Henry's headquarters at Tewkesbury. These also are seen during the final battle.
MP 40
King Henry's soldiers carry MP 40s when trying to defend themselves against Richard's attack.

Some of Richard's guards are armed with the MP 41.
Rifles

The Lee-Enfield No.1 Mk. III* is seen in the hands of the vast majority of British soldiers throughout the film.
Enfield Pattern 1914
Pattern 1914 Enfield rifles are seen in the hands of many of Richmond's soldiers when they fight Richard's army towards the end of the film.
Machine Guns
Browning Automatic Rifle
Some of Richard of Gloucester's soldiers in the opening attack on Tewekesbury, and Richmond's soldiers during the final battle at Bosworth Field, are armed with Browning Automatic Rifles.
