Bertrand Tavernier (April 25, 1941 – March 25, 2021) was a French film director. He started as a film critic. His love was for classic American cinema, especially undiscovered and underrated directors. In contrast to his colleagues from the Nouvelle Vague a decade earlier, he also defended classic French cinema. When he began making long feature films in 1974, he initially aligned himself entirely with this tradition in terms of content and aesthetics. Although strongly influenced by US cinema, he was a French director through and through. Tavernier devoted himself to both historical and contemporary subjects, made genre films as well as psychological studies, and filmed Georges Simenon as well as Jim Thompson. Particularly striking themes in his films were the war and the French colonial system, justice, and the police. Tavernier always focuses on people, their lives, their work, their relationships, and their hopes, for which he always evokes understanding. From the 1990s onwards, his films became more modern and radical. He shot some of his masterpieces and made his great documentaries about the Algerian war or classic French cinema.
