The Barrett MRAD (Multi-Role Adaptive Design) is a sniper rifle based on the Barrett M98B that was one of the candidates in USSOCOM's 2009 Precision Sniper Rifle (PSR) bid, requiring sub-MOA accuracy in a 10-round group at ranges up to 1,500 metres, provision of Picatinny rails, an easily changed barrel, and a weight of less than 18 pounds loaded. The MRAD ultimately lost out to the [[Remington MSR]], but USSOCOM later initiated the Advanced Sniper Rifle (ASR) project that resulted in the MRAD's selection after the MSR underperformed. Among many changes to the MRAD from the standard 98B is a side-folding stock. At SHOT 2020, Barrett unveiled a more cost-affordable version called the MRAD SMR (Single Mission Rifle) featuring a single caliber/fixed barrel and buttstock and is 2.5 lbs lighter as a result.

The MRAD ultimately lost out to the Remington MSR, but USSOCOM later initiated the Advanced Sniper Rifle (ASR) project that resulted in the MRAD's selection after the MSR underperformed.

The US military MRAD is designated as MK22 and is issued in three calibers - .338 Norma Magnum, .300 Norma Magnum, and 7.62x51mm NATO. It's currently undergoing final trials and is expected to fully enter service in 2022. In addition to the US Military, the MRAD was also adopted by Israel, Norway and New Zealand militaries.

In 2024, a variant named the MRADELR (Extreme Long Range) was announced, featuring a 36" barrel with a 1:9" twist rate, avaiable for now only in .416 Barrett.
