Einstossflammenwerfer 46. The front of the weapon is on the left.

Einstossflammenwerfer 46 (literally "single shot flamethrower"), also known as the Volksflammerwerfer 46 ("people's flamethrower") and the Abwehrflammenwerfer 46 ("defence flamethrower") is a German single shot disposable flamethrower, put into service in 1944. It was intended for Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers) but saw most action in hands of Volkssturm ("people's storm," a conscript militia established in October 1944). About 30,700 devices were manufactured. From its visual similarity to the tanks of the later Soviet LPO-50 flamethrower, it was probably similar in function, using an explosive compression charge to fire rather than a propellant gas reservoir as on a conventional flamethrower, emptying the fuel tank in about half a second. This was a firing method used by Soviet FOG flame mines, and had already been used by Germany to make the stove-sized Abwehrflammenwerfer 42 flame mine, a direct copy of the Soviet FOG-1.
