The Voevodin pistol (Russian: Пистолет системы Воеводина (ПВ), "Pistol Voevodin (PV)") is a Soviet self-loading pistol, planned for adoption by the USSR armed forces in place of the TT pistol. On May 17, 1938, a competition was announced for the design of a new type of 7.62mm semi-automatic pistol to arm Red Army vehicle crews. The Voevodin pistol was the answer to this competition; one of the main concerns was to create a semi-automatic pistol that could be used by vehicle crews to shoot through fireports like the Nagant Revolver (the TT was ill-suited for this purpose due to its reciprocating slide). As a result, it lacks a slide and has a relatively long fixed barrel. Developed by TsKB-14 (Tula) designer P.V. Voevodin, approximately 500 to 1,500 pistols with different details were created from 1939 to the conclusion of the Second World War in 1945. The weapon was constantly improved during this period, but never put into series production. Supposedly, the chief designer sent a sample of his gun as a gift to Stalin to convince him to mass produce it. The pistol's second version is also notable for its (at the time) unprecedented capacity of 18 rounds in a standard-sized box magazine without the bulk usually associated with high-capacity pistol magazines of the era.
