The SIG-Sauer P225 was the first compact SIG, and the easiest way to differentiate this pistol from a P228 or a P229 is the combination of full-height slide serrations, squared trigger guard and no rail. No P228 or P229 variant has these features. The P225 also uses a single-stack magazine while the P228/229 uses a double-stack - The latter pistols therefore feature frame bulges that accommodate the double-stack magazine while the P225 does not. The trigger guard can also help identify the P225. Note how the bottom of the trigger guard is flat, as opposed to the P228R/P229R. The P225 was also adopted by the West German Police as the SIG-Sauer P6. They cut notches in the hammer to know if a gun had been dropped on it. If there is a notch in the hammer, the gun is a P6.

This page contains all the variants of the SIG-Sauer P220 pistol line. Many of these pistols look very similar or even identical, so this gallery provides a quick way to spot the variant you are looking for. Under each picture, there will be a few tips to distinguish the variants from one another. For ease of view, this page is sorted according to the respective variant. Clicking the headings of each table will take you to the page on this site for that variant.

SIG-Sauer P220

The distinguishing factor between the P226 and the P220 is that the P220 uses a single-stack magazine while the P226 uses a double-stack. The only way to tell from the outside of the pistol are to look for the bulges (above the trigger, between the decocker and the takedown lever) that accommodate the double-stack magazine. If the bulges are present, the pistol is a P226. (See the P226 section to see the bulges.)

SIG-Sauer P225/P6

SIG-Sauer P226

The distinguishing factor between the P226 and the P220 is that the P220 uses a single-stack magazine while the P226 uses a double-stack. The only way to tell from the outside of the pistol are to look for the bulges (above the trigger, between the decocker and the takedown lever) that accommodate the double-stack magazine. If the bulges are present, the pistol is a P226. (See the P220 section to see when no bulges are present.)

SIG-Sauer P228

The P228 is the P229's predecessor, and the first compact high-capacity SIG - The P225 uses a single-stack magazine while the P228 uses a double-stack - The P228 therefore features frame bulges that accommodate the double-stack magazine while the P225 does not. The main aesthetical difference between the P228 and P229 is that the P228 has full-height serrations as opposed to the half-height slide serrations on the P229. The only P229 to have full height serrations is the P229E2. This could be easily mistaken for a P228R if the grips are not visible. The main distinction between the two is that the extractor the P229E2 is much larger than the P228R's.

SIG-Sauer P229

The P229 is the P228's successor. The main aesthetical difference is that the P229 has half-height slide serrations as opposed to the full-height serrations on the P228. The only P229 to have full height serrations is the P229E2. This could be easily mistaken for a P228R if the grips are not visible. The main distinction between the two is that the extractor the P229E2 is much larger than the P228R's.

SIG-Sauer Mosquito
