Deacons for Defense is a 2003 Showtime movie that was inspired by a true story of a group of African American citizens of Bogalusa, Louisiana, who took up arms to protect themselves from the KKK and the local law. The film stars Forest Whitaker, Jonathan Silverman and Ossie Davis and was directed by Bill Duke. Although set in the Deep South, the movie was actually shot in Ontario using many Canadian actors.
The following weapons were used in the film Deacons for Defense:
Smith & Wesson Model 10
Bogalusa policemen carry Smith & Wesson Model 10s as their service weapons.
Luger P08
Marcus Clay is seen with a Luger P08. Since Marcus is a World War II veteran who served in the European theater, it's possible this is a war trophy he picked up.
FN Trombone
Marcus' father Joshua Clay (Calvin Green) and later Marcus (Forest Whitaker) are seen with a FN Trombone .22 pump-action rifle.
M1 Carbine
Archie (Tyrone Benskin) is seen with an M1 Carbine.
M1 Garand
Early in the film, some Deacons are armed M1 Garands.
M1928 Thompson
One of the Deacons is armed with an M1928 Thompson.
High Standard Flite King
Both a KKK member and a Deacon carry High Standard Flite King shotguns. The shotgun was taken from the KKK member by the Deacon during their first confrontation. This is anachronistic, as the Flite King was released in 1966, two years after when the film is set
Sawn-off Double Barreled Shotgun
Marcus takes a Sawn-off Double Barreled Shotgun from a Klansman.
Remington 700
Lester Conley (Tim Burd) waits to assassinate Marcus with a Remington 700.
M1911A1
William Chase (Christopher Britton), the head of the local KKK, carries a M1911A1 pistol. Other Klan members and Baily also carry them.
M16A1
The Deacons pick up several crates of military weapons from New Orleans longshoremen, including several M16A1 rifles. In a continuity error, many Deacons are seen with M16s prior to this.
M16
Marcus is also seen with an original slab-sided M16s.
M60
Another weapon they pick up from the longshoremen, but never use, is a M60 machine gun.
M26 Hand Grenade
The Deacons also pick up a crate of M26 hand grenades, which causes concern among the Deacons.
MAC-11
Baily is seen with a MAC-11 during a montage.
Remington 870
A Klansman is armed with what appears to be a Remington 870.
