In the film, Mark David Chapman (Jared Leto) carries a Smith & Wesson Model 36. The revolver that was used by Chapman to shoot John Lennon in real life was a Charter Arms Undercover, but the Smith & Wesson Model 36 bares a close resemblance to a Charter Arms, and was probably used due to its availability.

Chapman unfolds his revolver

Mark David Chapman (Jared Leto) points his revolver at the wall, where on the other side are "two obvious homosexuals". This picture shows the ejector pin catch that the Smith & Wessons have, unlike older model Charter Arms Undercovers.

Chapman practices shooting John Lennon in front of his hotel room mirror. Once again, the ejector pin catch is clearly visible.
