The rifle was created as part of a program initiated in 1890 by the French military to develop a semi-automatic infantry rifle that would eventually replace the Mle 1886–93 Lebel rifle. More than 20 designs were created based on the guidelines. The designs were divided into 3 research centers. Section Technique de l'Artillerie (STA) with models starting with the letter A. Ecole Normale de Tir, (ENT) with models starting with the letter B. And jointly Commission Technique de Versailles (CTV) and Etablissement Technique de Puteaux (APX) with models starting with the letter B. STA produced the following models.:

  • Rifle A1
  • Rifle A2 STA 5
  • Rifle A3 STA 6
  • Rifle A4
  • Carbine A4
  • Rifle A5 STA 7
  • Rifle A6 STA 8
  • Carbine A6

Finally, after years of trials and testing, the Meunier A6 Rifle was accepted into service with the French Army in 1910. Finally, in 1914, MAS was prepared to produce 5,000 rifles per year. But production was stopped due to the risk of war with Germany. Previously, 1013 units were produced in MAT. And they were tested on the front. Unfortunately, most of them were lost forever. During the war, various modifications were tested, including a shortened version of the A6 Carbine. At that time, it was the most modern design in the world. It is not known how many models have survived to this day.
