Mossberg & Sons
About
O.F. Mossberg & Sons, often referred to as simply Mossberg, is an American manufacturer of shotguns, rifles, handguns, scopes, and firearm accessories. The company's founder, Oscar Frederick Mossberg, was a Swedish immigrant to the United States who got his start in the firearms industry working for Iver Johnson. In 1919, Mossberg lost his job at the Marlin-Rockwell company (the predecessor of the modern Marlin Firearms) after their factory closed following the end of World War I. Mossberg, along with his sons Iver and Harold, founded the Mossberg company in New Haven, Connecticut, United States that same year. Their first product was the Mossberg Brownie, a .22 caliber derringer-style pocket pistol, released in 1920.
Mossberg focused on producing simple and economic sporting arms, primarily bolt- and pump-action .22 caliber rifles. During World War II, Mossberg produced parts for the Browning M2 and Lee-Enfield, while its .22 caliber rifles were used as training rifles by the US military. In 1962, Mossberg released the Mossberg 500 shotgun, the product it is most known for, which would become one of the most widely produced and purchased shotguns in history. In 1988, Mossberg established Maverick Arms to produce lower-cost designs of their popular shotguns to compete with cheap foreign imports. In 1989, Mossberg opened a large plant in Eagle Pass, Texas, for Maverick to produce its products. Starting in 2013, almost all of Mossberg's modern production is carried out in the Eagle Pass plant.
Mossberg continues to be family-owned and operated, with its current CEO Alan Iver Mossberg Jr. being the great grandson of Oscar Frederick Mossberg. Today, Mossberg produces bolt-action, lever-action, and semiautomatics rifles, pump and semiautomatic shotguns, and as of 2019, handguns, with the Mossberg MC1sc pistol- the first handgun produced by the company since the Brownie nearly 100 years prior.
