Jesse James is a 1939 Western film directed by Henry King and starring Tyrone Power as the titular Jesse James. After the success of the film, a sequel titled The Return of Frank James was released a year later, directed by Sam Hellman.
The following weapons were used in the film Jesse James (1939):
Revolvers
Colt 1860 Army
Jesse James (Tyrone Power) briefly uses a Colt 1860 Army in the film's beginning to defend his family from railroad representative Barshee (Brian Donlevy) and his men.
Single Action Army
Jesse James (Tyrone Power), Frank James (Henry Fonda), and their gang of outlaws use the Single Action Army in several of their robberies. Law enforcement officers also carry Single Action Armys to try to stop the James brothers and their gang of outlaws.
Colt New Service
In a continuity error, the Colt Single Action Army of Frank James (Henry Fonda) is replaced by a Colt New Service. This is an anachronism, since the Colt New Service was first produced in 1898, and the film is based on the criminal career of the James brothers (1860-1882).
Remington 1858 New Army
In a continuity error, the Colt 1860 Army of Jesse James (Tyrone Power) is replaced by a Remington 1858 New Army.
Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3
Jesse James (Tyrone Powers) uses a Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 as his main sidearm throughout the film. It is known that one of the last weapons that Jesse James used in his lifetime was a Smith & Wesson .45, so the Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 seen on the film is historically correct.
Rifles
Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine
Bob Ford (John Carradine) and several of Ford's henchmen use an anachronistic Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine to ambush the James brothers' gang in one of his bank robberies.
Springfield Model 1866 "Trapdoor Springfield"
One of the guards at the prison where Jesse James (Tyrone Powers) is imprisoned is armed with a Springfield Model 1866 "Trapdoor Springfield".
