Les Misérables (2012)
|
Les Misérables is the 2012 British film adaptation of the musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo and was directed by Tom Hooper from a screenplay by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Herbert Kretzmer. Early plans for a film version of the musical have existed since the late 1980s. After the concert performance to mark the 25th anniversary of the musical (in the revised 1985 version) on October 3, 2010, producer Cameron Mackintosh announced the resumption of the project.
Convict Jean Valjean spent almost 20 years in prison as "prisoner 24601" for stealing bread for his starving family. When he is released on parole, he wants to start a new life. To do so, however, he must first escape the grasp of the relentless Inspector Javert, who is always on his tail, just waiting for Valjean to make a mistake. Those around him are also hostile towards him because of his misconduct and imprisonment. In order to leave the past behind him once and for all, Valjean violates the terms of his parole: he goes into hiding and assumes a new identity.
