Type 99 hand grenade
The Type 99 hand grenade was introduced in 1939 after observations of behaviors of the Type 91 and Type 97 grenades in the colder regions of Northern China and in Manchuria. It consisted of a cast iron body without ribbing. The bottom was now thinner so that despite lower dimensions, the weight of the explosive charge was equal to the type 97 grenade. However, because of the use of picric acid instead of TNT, the explosive effect was significantly greater. Since the picric acid attacked the steel, the interior of the shell was coated with a protective varnish.
The normal impact fuse had been modified to produce fewer duds under the more extreme weather conditions. So the gas outlet was now covered with a closed sheet metal tray. In this tray, holes were drilled from above at an angle of 90 ° to the two gas outlets. So it could be prevented that the escaping hot gas jet burned the launcher. In addition, it was prevented so that the glowing gas jet could be seen by the enemy at night.
The firing pin and striker carrier were now a part that was made even more massive. Also, the percussion caps had been enlarged. As a result, the detonator was more reliable overall. The burning time of the delay charge was 4.5 seconds, like the Type 97 grenade.
The Type 99 could be used as both a hand grenade and a shell for the Type 100 grenade discharger.
