The Tunnel is a UK/French television mystery crime series that follows two police officers, Detective Chief Inspector Karl Roebuck (Stephen Dillane), a senior Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer with the Kent- based Northbourne Constabulary, and Captain (later Commander) Elise Wassermann (Clémence Poésy) of the Calais Brigade criminelle (Criminal Brigade), part of the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police (DCPJ) of the French National Police , who have to work together on multiple crimes that take place on the British-French border.
Season 1 sees the two meet for the first time, where they are called to solve the mystery of two severed body halves of different nationalities that are discovered in the Channel Tunnel, and deal with the subsequent actions of the "Truth Terrorist" in both the UK and France.
Season 2 (also known as The Tunnel: Sabotage) sees Karl and Elise working together once again after terrorists remotely crash a passenger airliner into the Channel Tunnel, and subsequently investigate both the terrorist group "Defence" who caused the attack, and other higher ranking parties involved in a wider conspiracy.
The series premiered in 2013 on Sky Atlantic in the UK and on Canal+ in France. The Tunnel was based on the Danish/Swedish-produced 2011 series Bron/Broen, which also was adapted into the US/Mexico television series The Bridge, which premiered in 2013 in the US on the FX Network.
