I always liked this film due to how much it contrasts to modern portrayals of the NYPD that I'm so accustomed to. The men wore hats, the cops were super Irish, no one had ever heard of Miranda rights or doctor-patient privilege, and parents can openly discuss the merits of whipping their children. --Funkychinaman 21:15, 3 January 2012 (CST)

The little things

I'm fascinated by the little things.

A shot of Halloran's shoulder holster. You'd think he'd go for a Detective Special.

In addition to this shoulder holster, apparently plainclothes detectives used to wear special belts for just their ammo and handcuffs instead of wearing them on their regular belts today. (And you'd think someone would've invented the speedloader about two minutes after inventing the swing-out cylinder.) Halloran takes his off a few seconds later.

Halloran can be seen unloading his service revolver once he's off duty. I guess that makes sense, but I've just never seen it before. (The outfit that Halloran's wife is wearing is a lot skimpier than I expected as well for 1948. She's not going to the beach, that's for around the house.

Halloran straps his equipment back on after being called back on duty. The ammo belt seems rather conspicuous.

banker's special?

I've always thought that the gun that Garza carries in his back pocket is smaller than a detective special. May be it is a Banker's special?

I'm positive(pun intended) that the Colts are Police Positive Specials,not OPs. The PPS has a simple oval shaped to the trigger guard,while that to the OP dips right over the trigger,giving it a sort of kidney bean shape. while that's hard to see in the provided stills, the cylinder flutes on the PPS are longer than those of the OP:note the shot of Muldoon yelling to Garza. With these vintage movies it's tricky to guess te model based on size as the average person was smaller than the avarage today, thus a PPS will look bigger. The 5 inch barrel,BTW, was alot more common then, and Mrs. Halloran's outfit style show up in alot of vintage photos. --Tecolote (talk) 23:22, 27 April 2015 (EDT)
