Proper name

The FNH USA website refers to this is the Mk 13, which is apparently what USSOCOM calls it, but the regular FNH website just refers to it as the FN40GL-L/-H/-S. Why are we going by the USSOCOM designation rather than the manufacturer designation? Is the Mk 13 actually a different model, or is it just nomenclature? --Funkychinaman 09:49, 21 December 2011 (CST)

The weapon was first proposed for USSOCOM's EGLM requirement; in full, it was adopted at Mk 13 Mod 0 EGLM. I guess FN40GL is just how they sell it to everyone else, same as Mk 16 / 17 versus SCAR. Evil Tim 10:10, 21 December 2011 (CST)
The FN SCAR page simply refers to it the SCAR. The names "Mk 16/17" only show up on it a few times. --Funkychinaman 12:33, 22 December 2011 (CST)
Thinking about it, it's possible the change to FN40GL from EGLM (which I'm sure they used to use) might have something to do with the Colt / Bushmaster M4 lawsuit; I notice HK has started referring to the AG-C as "EGLM" and it's possible that since the EGLM term originates from USSOCOM and not from FN itself that they feared a lawsuit might go a similar way and declare EGLM as generic. Evil Tim 02:29, 22 December 2011 (CST)
Maybe they're just capitalizing on a popular name? That's how the whole "M4" issue popped up in the first place. Spartan198 06:09, 23 December 2011 (CST)
I checked on this: until 2007, FN Herstal's website (or the parts I can get through archive.org, the Java links don't work) doesn't mention a name for the Mk 13, FN40GL or GL-1 at all, only mentioning them as part of an "integrated weapon system;" check here, click "Unique Opportunity to See FN HERSTAL's Products in Latin America" and then follow the link to the F2000.
The later names only appear after they re-designed their site in July 2008; I guess before that the weapon was called the EGLM because was FN's entry for the USSOCOM EGLM trials (ie, it was the "FN EGLM"). Evil Tim 06:18, 23 December 2011 (CST)
Scroll down a little way to a picture of a Mikhail Kalashnikov holding an F2000/GL-1 and the text beside it refers to the launcher by the name "LV". Spartan198 06:26, 23 December 2011 (CST)
That's just "low velocity," as in 40mm LV (40x46mm) as opposed to the high-velocity (40x53mm). They list it later as the type of ammo it uses. Evil Tim 06:31, 23 December 2011 (CST)
Calling the SCAR-L "MK 16" is not wrong, some video game pages do that, as some pages say M4 Super 90 while some others say M1014. (Although I doubt that the "Mod 0" thingy should be used as it is on the BF3 page.) It does not matter if this launcher is called the "MK 13" or "FN40GL", but calling it "FN EGLM" on a film/game/anime page is definitely incorrect. ("FN EGLM" is a good name for this page, 'cuz it summarizes both GL1 and MK 13.) That is what I think. - bozitojugg3rn4ut 07:03, 23 December 2011 (CST)

SCAR stands for SOCOM Assulat Rifle, MK16 refers to the 5.56mm version, MK17 refers to the 7.62mm version. EGLM stands for Enhaced Gernade Launcher Module. Calling the SCAR-L the MK16 is wrong as it refers to the wrong weapon.

What? The Mk 16 is the same thing as the SCAR-L, just like the M4A1 is the same thing as the M921. Alex T Snow 11:24, 30 January 2012 (CST)
He's wrong anyway, it stands for "Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle." The "S" stands for "SOF" because they wanted to call it SCAR and didn't care if the acronym actually made any sense. Evil Tim 11:52, 1 February 2012 (CST)

Mechanism.

Out of curiosity, how exactly does one open this for loading? Does the barrel slide forward, does it pivot to the side, or does it do something else that I haven't thought of? Help would be appreciated. Yours truly, Pyr0m4n14c (talk) 09:54, 1 August 2016 (EDT)

Seems to work like a M203. There's a button/lever you press on the left side that slides it forward.--AnActualAK47 (talk) 11:08, 1 August 2016 (EDT)
Thanks for the help. Pyr0m4n14c (talk) 09:22, 2 August 2016 (EDT)
After sliding forward, it can also pivot in either direction. Spartan198 (talk) 20:33, 6 March 2017 (EST)
