The SVD (Russian: Снайперская винтовка Драгунова, romanized: Snáyperskaya Vintóvka Dragunóva lit. 'Dragunov Sniper Rifle'), commonly called the "SVD Dragunov" or "Dragunov SVD" in English sources, is a Russian semi-automatic sniper rifle designed by Soviet weapon designer Yevgeny Dragunov. Original military production versions of the SVD feature wood furniture; later SVD production models from around the 1990 onwards feature upgraded synthetic furniture, with a redesigned, more skeletonized stock, and added ribs on the handguard, as well as a smooth receiver cover.

The Tiger (Russian: Тигр, Tigr) is a commercial variant of the SVD produced by Izhmash (now Kalashnikov Concern). Originally created in 1969, the Tiger was produced in limited numbers under the Soviet Union, mainly in response to special orders from the Soviet Ministry of Defense. After the Soviet dissolution, Izhmash began large scale production of the Tiger in 1992, for the Russian domestic and export market, including the United States. At various times, the Tiger was produced in different calibers, including 7.62x54mm R, .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm NATO), .30-06 Springfield, and 9.3x64mm.

Tigers come with a large variety of furniture and specs; the ones more commonly seen in the United States typically feature a shortened barrel that lacks the flash hider. However, other models have full-length barrels, as well as flash hiders, either the standard military flash hider or the shortened SVDS flash hider. They come with many different types of stocks and furnitures, including early model SVDs' wooden furnitures, later model SVDs' synthetic furnitures, as well as SVDS folding stocks, Monte carlo stocks, and thumbhole stocks. Early Tigers have a ribbed receiver cover, while more recent Tiger versions have a completely smooth receiver cover. The Tiger usually does not have a bayonet lug, though some US imported Tigers come with bayonet lugs.

The Kalashnikov TG3, revealed in 2018, is a civilian Lancaster-bored version of the SVD legally classified as a shotgun under Russian law (making it much easier for civilians to acquire as the Russian shotgun license is easier to acquire than the rifle license), due to having a legally-smoothbore barrel. It fires the special 9.6x53mm Lancaster (also known as 9.6/53 Lancaster) round produced by Techcrim.

The SVU (also known as "OTs-03") is the bullpup version of the SVD, developed by TsKIB SOO for Russian special forces. The SVU-A (OTs-03A) is another variant, capable of fully automatic fire, while the SVU-AS (OTs-03AS) is equipped with a bipod. The SVU was introduced in 1991, and entered service three years later, the SVU-A was introduced in 1995.

The SVU also features a combined muzzle suppressor, which eliminates flashes, muffles the sound of a shot and scatters it, preventing the shooter from being detected.

Following the Sino-Vietnamese War, China produced clones of the Soviet SVD captured from Vietnam. The clones were developed by Factory 296 (now known as Jianshe), and consisted of two models: the Type 79 sniper rifle, which saw limited service, and the "slightly improved" Type 85 sniper rifle, which saw a more widespread service. It is unclear what are the exact improvements between the Type 79 and the Type 85 however, and the two models appear largely identical to each other (and the Soviet SVD).

China exported several versions of the Type 79/85 under several export companies. Norinco exports the NDM-86, with two versions: a 7.62x54mm R version called the "EM351", and a .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm NATO) version called the "EM352". The NDM-86 "EM351" was imported between 1986-1989 into the US, while the The "EM352" was imported for a longer time due to it having a different caliber than the "military firearm". China's Poly Technologies also exported a small series of Chinese SVDs called the PDM-86.

Note: As the Type 79, Type 85, and the NDM-86 "EM351" are all visibly indistinguishable from the Soviet SVD, IMFDB currently only identifies the NDM-86 "EM352".

As it is built from Yugoslavian supplied Zastava M70 tooling that also made the Tabuk series, the Al-Kadesiah shares no parts with the original SVD aside having the same pattern scope mount and its distinct palm tree and saber-pattern ribbed magazines interchange with SVD mags.

How to tell an SVD from a PSL

SVD Dragunov - 7.62x54mm R. Shorter exposed part of gas piston, no visible dividing line in the handguard (it splits into two side-pieces rather than a top and bottom), thinner bent safety lever, bayonet lug mounted on front sight, dust cover retaining lever above the pistol grip on the right side rather than AK push-button, no "X" stamping on magazine, gap between magazine well and front of trigger guard, hooded front sight, top of stock in-line with bore axis.

PSL - 7.62x54mm R. Note longer exposed part of the gas piston, two-piece AK-style handguard, straight safety lever, bayonet lug mounted on barrel behind front sight, AK-style receiver with dust cover retaining button at rear, "X" shaped stamping on the magazine, magazine located immediately in front of the trigger guard rather than some distance ahead, open front sight, diagonal stock.
