The pistol that Serpico (Al Pacino) finds in the glove compartment of Rudy Corsaro's (Richard Foronjy) car is not a Sterling Arms pistol; rather, it is a Smith & Wesson Model 61 (the "Escort"). Note the features that make this identification possible: 1. The width of the grip frame (the distance from front strap to the back strap) is markedly greater than on the Sterling. 2. The left grip panel extends all the way to the rear edge of the frame along the entire length of the rear edge of the frame, from the slide to the magazine well, which is not the case on the Sterling. 3. The front (i.e. forward-facing) aspect of the slide is elongated, rather than circular as on the Sterling. 4. The muzzle is at the bottom of the front aspect of the slide, rather than in the center of the front of the slide as on the Sterling.
