The Dark Valley is a 2014 Austrian-German Western drama movie directed by Andreas Prochaska. At the end of the 19th century, a stranger named Greider arrives on a horse and mule in a sleepy and remote Alpine high valley. The path there is little more than a half-weathered footpath between rocks. To escape the cold winter, Greider asks the insular village community for a place to stay. Since he can offer them a few gold coins in return, they put him up with the widow Gader and her daughter Luzi, who is about to get married. After the village is snowed in overnight, one of the village patriarch's sons dies in an accident. Afterward, when another of his sons inexplicably loses his life, doubts arise as to whether they were accidents. Immediately, Greider is suspected of having something to do with the accidents. In addition, suspicions spread that an old, dark secret of the inhabitants might have something to do with it.

The following weapons were used in the film The Dark Valley:

Rifles

Gewehr 1888

A Gewehr 1888 is very briefly held by one of the Brenner family members seen during the opening. The appearance of this rifle in this scene is probably anachronistic. No precise dates are given, but this scene takes place during Greider's childhood and Greider is around 30 years old during the events of the film, which are set during the late 19th century. In addition, the rifle is not clearly visible. So if it is not the updated 1905 version, it would be correct to see the rifle later in the film.

A view of the muzzle. These are the only clues, it is difficult to determine exactly which variant it is.

Mosin Nagant M91/30

Otto Brenner (Martin Leutgeb) is seen with an anachronistic Mosin Nagant M91/30 (likely standing in for the original M1891) which changes owners several times in the film. It is unclear why this particular rifle was used, as the Gewehr 88 was available.

At one point in the movie, the Mosin Nagant is taken away by Greider, who sees this rifle as the biggest threat from the family's arsenal. It is apparently the only magazine-fed bolt-action rifle in the town; the other rifles are single-shot rifles or shotguns.

Werndl Karabiner M1867/77

Luis Brenner (Clemens Schick) owns a Werndl Karabiner, which he uses several times.

Shotguns

Double Barreled Shotgun

Hans (Tobias Moretti) and Hubert Brenner (Helmuth A. Häusler) wield two different 12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotguns. Another shotgun is carried by Otto Brenner (Martin Leutgeb), who received it from Luis.
