Since real guns are a bit difficult to come by here in Germany, I resorted to Airsoft some time ago. I am part of a team running a successful German Airsoft forum (www.gasgunempire.de) and do a lot of reviews. That's how I stranded here... For every review I do a lot of research about the real gun. Checking out movies where these guns appear - especially iconic movies - is a very important background information. Sometimes it might even gives an idea about typical settings for the pictures. If you would like to see examples (and don't mind the German language), here are some:
Ingram M11 (The pictures are meant to look like an 80s Hong Kong action movie, like Hard Boiled.)
Tokarev TT33 (Some 1930s soviet style)
HK UMP .45 (The Expendables, anyone?!?)
