The Type 93 heavy machine gun is the Imperial Japanese Navy's imported and domestically produced version of the Hotchkiss M1929. The Hotchkiss was also used by the Imperial Japanese Army under the name Type Ho 13mm AA machine cannon ("Ho" taken from "Hotchkiss"). The Army's Type Ho was used as a stationary heavy machine gun and as an anti-aircraft weapon, while the Navy's Type 93 was primarily mounted aboard ships. Being developed before Hotchkiss switched the French model from 13.2x99mm to 13.2x96mm in 1935, the Japanese guns continued to use the original cartridge. The IJN's later Type 3 aircraft machine gun would, however, use the newer 13.2x96mm Hotchkiss cartridge.
The Hotchkiss design would also be the basis for the Type 98 cannon.
The Italian Regia Marina also used the Hotchkiss design aboard ships, the Breda Modello 31.
