Colt M1911A1

Gen. Lawrence Dell (Burt Lancaster) carries a M1911A1 pistol.

World War II issued Colt M1911A1 Pistol - .45 ACP

Madsen M50

USAF airmen guarding the nuclear launch facility are all armed with Madsen M50 submachine guns fitted with barrel shrouds. These weapons are also seen in the hands of Gen. Lawrence Dell (Burt Lancaster), Willis Powell (Paul Winfield), and Augie Garvas (Burt Young) .

M16

USAF snipers are armed with M16 rifles.

The original M16, the first version, firing in a 20-round magazine, adopted in large numbers by the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. This has the original 3-prong flash hider. It would later be replaced by the upgraded M16A1 - 5.56x45mm
