Chavel (Anthony Hopkins) finds the gun in a drawer in Therese's (Kristin Scott Thomas) dining room. Therese explains that she bought it to kill Chavel.
The gun was manufactured by Fabrique National D’armes de Guerre Herstal (FN Herstal) in Herstal, Belgium from 1906 to 1959 under a patent by Browning and is true to the time period and location of the movie.
