MG42

I do not believe that was the MG-42 in the movie. Instead I think it was the CEMTE Ameli SAW which, though externally similar to the MG-42, instead is not as long and fires the 5.56 round.

It was more likely a Rheinmetall MG3, which is a similar weapon except in .308 NATO; the Ameli has a carry handle on top and the one in the movie didn't, so it's probably an MG3.
Agree it was trying to be an MG3. The Ameli only entered service the year they were filming this, is green, notably smaller, and has an integral carry handle as mentioned above. The guns in the film were black, large, apparently .30 caliber, and the muzzle devices look like the German MG3. The page has a good image, and a pretty convincing argument that it's something other than an MG3, dressed to look like one, and if you compare to a real one, the sheet metal barrel shroud is clearly a bit wrong (too big and blocky). Recoiless Rifle

The shoulder-fired anti-armour weapon appears to be an M18 57mm recoilless rifle. The peculiar side-mounted pistol grip and forward monopod are typical of the M18.

M14

I don't think the M14 was the E2. Isn't the E2 the failed Squad Automatic Weapon version? The M14 sniper rifle is the M21. It's useing an M-14E2 stock wich makes it an M-14E2. RW66

Whats weird about the that M14 is that it doesn't have the flash suppressor of the M14E2 but it does have the stock of the M14E2.Oliveira 21:16, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
The E2 is just an M14 put into a pistol gripped stock and bipod. The Flash Suppressor just slips over the M14 flash hider and screws into place. It was only there to control muzzle climb and blast during "prolonged auto fire". The M14 was always (in Nam) a select fire weapon. But the E2 can be used semi auto as a 'sniping weapon' as can any decent battle rifle. MoviePropMaster2008 22:56, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

M1

Based on an article in a 1994 issue of Guns & Ammo that discussed the weapon used in the film, the M1 Garand that Gene Hackman carries in the film is actually a T26 Tanker Garand variant.
