Other Weapons

Andy's Labrys

Andy, Charlize Theron's character, identifies herself as "Andromache the Scythian," referencing an empire from the 8th century BCE. The edged weapon she wields is a modernized version of the labrys, a double-headed battle axe associated with mythical immortal characters such as Zeus.

Nicky's Knightly Arming Sword

Nicky, Luca Marinelli's character, mentions that he died during the Crusades. In a nod to this history, he carries a cruciform-hilted, double-edged, single-handed sword that looks similar to those used during the High Middle Ages throughout Europe.

Joe's Saracen Scimitar

Joe, Marwan Kenzari's character, also died during the Crusades, but on the side of the Saracens (Arabs). Consistent with this, he wields a fantasy version of a scimitar, a curved backsword that was popular with Middle-Eastern warriors during the Middle Ages. It's worth noting that "Scimitar" is an anglicized version of the Italian word "scimitarra," and refers generically to curved swords. Different cultures throughout Asia and the ancient Middle and Near East used different forms of these swords, for which they had their own names. The sword that Joe uses looks more like the type that is used primarily for modern belly-dancing performances than an actual sword of the Crusades era.

Discussion

Title

Shouldn't the title of this page, for the purpose of wiki indexing, be "Old Guard, The"? --PyramidHead (talk) 14:08, 29 July 2020 (EDT)

Yes, it should. I'll take care of it. Spartan198 (talk) 19:04, 29 July 2020 (EDT)

I'm also pretty sure we don't include halberds, scimitars, or arming swords. While they may be prominent in the movie, they aren't culturally significant like, say, Rambo's knife. Spartan198 (talk) 19:09, 29 July 2020 (EDT)

Sorry for the confusion ... This is my first time creating a page for IMFDB, so I'm learning the ropes. I wasn't sure what happened to the edged weapons info, so I put it back in. I was specifically thinking of Rambo's knife as a precedent for including those items, but I understand if that's not IMFDB protocol. ZionAmmo (talk) 08:28, 30 July 2020 (EDT)ZionAmmo

The grenade launcher and pistol

Looks like an FN EGLM. The unidentified pistol Charlize uses looks like a P22x series, but is a prop like you mentioned. --PyramidHead (talk) 21:39, 29 July 2020 (EDT)

Thanks! I'll add that info. ZionAmmo (talk) 08:29, 30 July 2020 (EDT)
