MAS-40 - 7.5x54mm French. This was the second prototype in the line of MAS semi-automatic rifles, right after the first MAS-38/39 variant. While the most of MAS-38/39 and MAS-40 rifles was fed from a standard fixed 5-round magazine (similar to the MAS-36), several was modified to loaded from 20-round Chatellerault M1924/29 magazines. It was produced only in very small quantities, and was never officially issued by the French army. The stocks of rifles were eventually captured by the German army, but were left without interest. In 1944, they were recapture and ended up in the hands of the Resistance.

Merge with MAS-49 page

Shouldn't this page be merged with the MAS-49 article as they are all developments on the same pattern of rifle?--AgentGumby (talk) 13:46, 14 April 2020 (EDT)

On another note, I wonder if anyone can confirm whether 38/39 was capable (or not) to full-auto fire. This has a curious switch on the right side, not available in next versions. There are scans of the French article on the network: [1], but there’s a whole shaft of information that not so easy to make out. As far as I can tell, there was a whole family of different prototypes, which were submitted both from fixed magazines and from removable ones. --Slon95 (talk) 16:45, 14 April 2020 (EDT)
