Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet (Early 2018)

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet is the fifth entry in Sword Art Online's alternate timeline video game universe, often dubbed the "Gameverse". As with the novel/anime timeline, much of Sword Art Online does not feature firearms, and so the previous four games, Hollow Fragment, Lost Song, Hollow Realization, and Millennium Twilight, do not feature their own pages on this site.

The Gameverse timeline is a parallel timeline to the original timeline, diverging during the climactic duel at the end of the Aincrad story arc. Hollow Fragment opens with this duel, but it is interrupted by a major glitch in the system, which leaves the showdown unresolved and forces the players trapped in Sword Art Online (the game) to finish clearing all 100 floors of the great floating castle, Aincrad. This single event reshapes everything that comes after it, splitting the two timelines. Much like the alternate timeline Star Trek movies, the new timeline retains many of the elements of the original, as many things would simply be unaffected by people being trapped in SAO a few more months, and many of the same subsequent events happen, though they often take place in a different manner. One notable relevant example to Fatal Bullet is Shino Asada (Username: Sinon) and her dark past, which, in the original timeline was dealt with alongside the Death Gun incident in the Phantom Bullet story arc, while in the gameverse her past has already been handled in Hollow Realization.

Unlike the previous games, in Fatal Bullet the player takes control of a (so far) nameless, customizable protagonist, with the established SAO cast as well as new characters supporting the story. Little is known about the plot so far, though an AI companion named ArFA-sys seems to be central to it. The protagonist's childhood friend with the username Kureha and a mysterious character who goes by Zeliska also play important roles; it can be safely assumed the Death Gun incident will occur in some capacity in the story as well.

As with the Phantom Bullet story arc in the original timeline, Fatal Bullet takes place in the VRMMORPG of Gun Gale Online. It should be noted, however, that Fatal Bullet (the real world video game) takes liberties with its depiction of firearm models, often appearing a bit stylized and slightly futuristic, without real names, something that the "real", in-universe Gun Gale Online does not do (as seen in Sword Art Online II). Generally one would say that a video game that gets firearms wrong or stylizes them is getting reality wrong, but in this case it's actually a real world game getting a fictional game wrong, because Fatal Bullet is a game representing another game. That said, the weapons aren't drastically stylized, and are always instantly recognizable. It's also worth noting that nearly every weapon seen in trailers and gameplay so far previously appeared in Sword Art Online II in some capacity.

Warning: Some descriptions and images are potential spoilers for the series, read at your own risk.

The following weapons appear in the video game Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet:

Pistols

FN Five-seveN

As with his original timeline self, Kazuto Kirigaya (Username: Kirito) uses an FN Five-seveN as his sidearm, with his Kagemitsu G4 photon sword being his primary weapon. While every other character gets two seperate weapon slots, Kirito instead gets to use his sword and pistol at the same time.

Dual-wielding with his Kagemitsu G4, Kirito holds his Five-seveN in his left hand.

Glock 18C

A custom version of the main character who shares Zeliska's hair can be seen firing what appears to be a Glock 18C fitted with a compensator in a trailer.

Submachine Guns

Heckler & Koch MP5K

A H&K MP5K fitted with the foregrip of the civilian SP89 is featured as the standard Machine Pistol, so far seen in the hands of Sinon as her secondary weapon, as well as Keiko Ayano (Username: Silica) and the new AI companion, ArFA-sys. As it is considered a machine pistol, the weapon is held with both hands around pistol grip, making the vert-grip superflous.

With a promo image all to herself, Silica shows off her MP5K; being a dagger-user in other games, machine pistols are an excellent fit for this little beast tamer. Her beloved companion, Pina the feathered dragon, will most likely appear in some sort of drone form in GGO.
The newly awakened ArFA-sys holds her MP5K, while the protagonist fires his FAMAS.

IMI Uzi

The Uzi appears as the standard/default Submachine Gun in the game, seen wielded by Kureha as well as many enemy Automatons. It should be noted that Automaton weapons scale up with them as they get larger, so some have much, much larger versions of their weapons.

IMI Uzi - 9x19mm
Kureha aims her Uzi one-handed at, given what can be gathered from the trailers, Kirito. Parts of what seem to all be this cutscene appear scattered around a trailer, and it seems this is how the new duo meet the main SAO cast, and the story unfolds from there.

FN P90

An FN P90 is seen used by an Automaton; it can be assumed it will be usable by players as well, as with all other Automaton-used weapons. In the main timeline, the P90 is the signature weapon of Karen Kohiruimaki (Username: LLENN) in the spin-off novel series Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online, who herself is available as both a playable character and an AI squad mate in this game.

Assault Rifles

FAMAS G2

The FAMAS G2, seen fitted with a bayonet, is featured as the canon weapon of the main protagonist in the opening CG cutscene, and it is also seen used by Suguha Kirigaya (Username: Leafa). Leafa also uses a photon sword just like her older brother/cousin, however Leafa's is her secondary weapon, and she does not dual-wield a pistol with it.

AR57 AR-57

An AR-57, manufactured by AR57 (yes, you read that right) appears to be the signature weapon of Asuna Yuuki (Username: Asuna), though it's also used plenty by Automatons and can be used by other characters as well. Her use of this weapon is not entirely surprising, as her boyfriend/fiancée/husband Kirito's Five-seveN shares the same round. That it's also one of the only weapons to appear that hasn't previously been seen in SAO only reinforces that it was chosen specifically for Asuna. In fact, this may actually be the AR-57's first appearance in any major media form. Despite its chambering, the AR-57 is classed in-game as an assault rifle.

Middle-left, former Knights of the Blood Oath Vice-Commander Asuna holds her AR-57 by her side.
Asuna holds her AR-57 on Kureha, who is holding her Uzi on Kirito, who himself just tried to attack the protagonist, who in turn was protecting ArFA-sys, whom the protagonist had just awoken. Now would be an excellent time for everyone to calm down a little.

SIG SG 550

The SIG SG 550 is seen used by a number of Automatons that differ in design to most that have been seen otherwise in gameplay.

Although not well seen in any of the footage so far, the Automaton on the left can be seen holding a SG 550. The rifle's general profile, green furniture, transparent magazine, and integral bipod are all visible.

Battle Rifles

Howa Type 64

The Howa Type 64, fitted with a bayonet, is seen in the hands of sniper-type Automatons, implying it may function as a semi-auto marksman rifle, however player-use gameplay has yet to be seen. A silver-plated version is seen as a preorder bonus.

Machine Guns

PKM

A PKM is seen used by the definitely-not-a-villain player named Zeliska.

M134 Minigun

Far more stylized than any other weapon in the game, a very large, handheld rotary machine gun is seen in the game, which, as always, is inspired by the many handheld M134s that have appeared in media over the years.

The protagonist fires a Minigun at a large knight-type boss.

Shotguns

Remington Model 870 Marine Magnum

A fairly generic-looking shotgun with a silver finish (tentatively being ID'd as an 870) appears to be the standard shotgun of the game, seen in the hands of Rika Shinozaki (Username: Lisbeth) as well as the protagonist, the latter of whom is able use any weapon class the player chooses.

On the far left, Lisbeth stands with her shotgun slung over her shoulder. Aincrad's top blacksmith will undoubtedly do just as well as a gunsmith.

Sniper Rifles

PGM Hécate II

Sinon, as always, uses a PGM Hécate II as her main weapon. As a side note, back in Millennium Twilight, set in ALfheim Online, it was revealed Sinon had already been playing Gun Gale Online, and her ultimate attack in that game allows her to summon her precious Hécate II to fire a single round for major damage; this is the only case of being able to use a firearm in a previous SAO game.

SVD

The SVD appears as what seems to be the game's standard semi-auto marksman weapon, though exactly how weapon types are split into categories isn't entirely clear yet.

MAS FR F2

The MAS FR F2 appears to be the default bolt action rifle in the game, so far mostly seen used by Automatons.

Launchers

Saab Bofors Dynamics AT4

The Saab Bofors Dynamics AT4 is seen in a trailer, used by a customized protagonist that shares ArFA-sys's hair.

Grenades

Plasma Grenade

GGO's plasma grenade makes a return as the game's standard grenade. Two are notably seen on Zeliska's belt.

On her belt, Zeliska has two plasma grenades, what can be assumed to be one smoke grenade, and a bandoleer of shotgun shells. If her two weapon classes really are LMGs and Shotguns, that's one hell of a powerful loadout.
