The Mannlicher-Schönauer (commonly simplified to Mannlicher–Schoenauer) rifle is rotary-magazine bolt-action rifle designed by Ferdinand Ritter Von Mannlicher and Otto Schönauer (the author of the rotary magazine) on the Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft (currently Steyr Mannlicher). The rifle was introduced in 1900, and in 1903 the Greek Army adopted the rifle chambered in the 6.5x54mm cartridge. The 1903 Mannlicher rifles and carbines were the last designs of Mannlicher, who died the next year. Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles and carbines were manufactured at Oesterreich Waffenfabrik Gesellschaft Steyr in Steyr, Austria. Steyr made carbines and sporters after World War One in various calibers.

The Mannlicher–Schönauer rifle was the main small arm for the Greek military till 1948. The first batch was supplied in 1906–07 to a total of about 130,000 long rifles and carbines. A second batch of 50,000 rifles was ordered from Steyr in 1914. When the war broke out, the Austrians stopped the delivery of the rifles. During the Greece-Turkish War (1919–22), the Greeks suffered large losses of the rifles, and in 1927, 105,000 Mannlicher–Schönauer rifles were ordered in Italy, on the Breda factory. It is speculated that Breda might have used Austrian captured parts and machinery for this order. In 1930, 25,000 more 1903/14/30 carbines was ordered on the Steyr factory.

A civilian version of the rifle, also introduced in 1903, proved popular with hunters. The hunting model was produced in a large variety of calibers, including .30-06 Springfield, .270 Winchester, .257 Weatherby Magnum, .264 Winchester Magnum, .338 Winchester Magnum, .458 Winchester Magnum, 6.5×68mm, 8×68mm S, and others. Steyr produced Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles until 1972, with the interrupt during the Second World War. Ernest Hemingway frequently used the rifle, and made it famous in his works, of those The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber is best known.
