Remington Arms
About
Remington Arms was founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington in New York. Originally known as "E. Remington and Sons", it is the oldest company in the United States which still makes its original product, and is the oldest continuously operating manufacturer in North America. Its merger with Union Metallic Cartridge in 1912 would produce Remington U.M.C. which upon Winchester exiting domestic production of firearms in 2006 left Remington the only U.S. brand which produced both firearms and ammunition domestically (though Savage would share a corporate umbrella with several ammo makers until it was spun off in 2019). Remington's acquisition by Cerberus Capital Management in 2007 led to spiraling quality control and eventual bankruptcy and restructuring in 2018, followed by another bankruptcy and breakup of the company in 2020. This led to its assets being split up among various bidding companies, the separation of the ammo brand and the firearms business to "no longer exists as a company". The ownership of most firearms brands, factories, and tooling under the "Remington" label was acquired by a new company called RemArms. The accompanying disruption to the ammo business coincided with a period of peak demand in the United States and led to a continent wide primer shortage.
